I live in a first floor apartment in Tampa. Just thinking ahead here… Are the preparations any different than if you own a house? They won’t board up my windows, will they? What should I do, other than have the necessities on hand?

I’m going on a cruise to the bahamas on sunday, when i watched the news today they said their is a tropical storm/could be hurricane by the end of this week. guess where they said it might head?? The bahamas what happens in this situation? will they reroute the cruise or could the cancel it?? i’ve gone on many cruise in August and nothing has ever happened so i’m not sure now. Thank you

we are about to purchase a new home with seemingly no safe place to take shelter. We have ALOT of tornados and bad weather around here and I was just wondering if anyone had one and how much it cost. (we live in central AL)

im 26 years old and i am a registered male nurse. i would like to relocate from columbus, ohio to west palm beach, florida. i would like to know what there is to do for fun down there? are the beaches, schools, hospitals, and city itself clean, nice, and safe? i would like to buy a home no more than 3 miles away from the ocean. i am planning on spending about 5,000 on the home and will put in hurricane shutters and everything if not already. would i be ok on my own for awhile until i have a wife and family? please tell me everything you know and make your awnser is as detailed as possible. thanks!

Inflation is when a currency decreases in value, and deflation is when a currency increases in value.

So like with Hurricane Katrina for example wouldn’t it actually be both because the natural disaster caused the damage which in turn could cause deflation because then people are going to be needing more of certain supplies, and if the natural disaster is big enough couldn’t it cause insufficient money supplies?

50 years ago the military swore that radiation didn’t cause any harm after 10 hours. Over 1,000 soldiers that witnessed the tests have died. Chernobyl may lead to over 6 million deaths! You may claim that technology today surpasses that of 3 mile island and Chernobyl, however, do you know how? Are you placing your faith in our government and president?

Our leaders have lied to us many times and still do leading to our deaths. The truth is that Nuclear energy is expensive & toxic. Toxic spent fuel goes where? What location can keep it for the 1 million years it takes to become safe? Will we keep using it until the world becomes a contaminated wasteland? Did you know that several countries want to dump nuclear waste on a city in Russia that still has residents living nearby? You think it’s safe?

Japan had critical leaks in 2002, the most high-tech country in the world. What happens if the coolant leaks? Suicide bomber, internal sabotage? Do you think the secret service checks the plant for cracks and leaks? What happens if a tornado, earthquake, destroys the cooling tower? You can’t just shut off the reactor with a button. It would overheat. Coal, oil, & gas won’t lead to the death of millions and horribly deformed children. It doesn’t rot the earth for millions of years until its properties become benign. Think about your children.

I’m moving to Florida and I’ll probably be there tomorrow but I was just wondering when hurricane season was because there are 2 out in the Atlantic right now. I’m not totally worried about it I guess it’s just my curiosity…

If so, what could be expected? * the distance was measured using Google Earth and a comparison of the radar data from weather.com
I mis-calculated the distance from the center of hurricane to outer ring. It isn’t 1300, more like 1700 miles.
Ya we’re gtting floods up here where i live now, so the rain is startng. and by sunday ike effective path should be near here so, i dont know what its gona be like if it gets worse
It even looks like everywhere on the planet if you chck on weather.com and click on the map and maplayers International clouds the entire earth is covered in swirling clouds. pretty crazy stuff.

Two years ago most people evacuated during Hurricane Rita, this year people are more reluctant because it turned out to be hellish since people ran out of gas, gas stations closed, some even ran out of supplies, and the traffic is agonizing under the hot weather.

I wonder if "Houstonians" are taking enough precautions. Is Dean going to hit Houston, if so how bad?

According to the link below the situation is not very alarming for the Houston area, http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/weather/hurricane/

All the major news coverage and all the resources are focused in New Orleans.
What about the people living in Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and even Texas?
Do these people mean nothing?
so you are saying the reason why all the attention is on New Orleans is because most of the residents are African Americans?

I would like to know what would work best.

What are some good car covering products that will coat and protect the car’s paint and body from rust, elements, weather, sun, "wear and tear , besides just wax"? Is "Armor all" pretty good or are there better things for this purpose? What have you found that works on your car the best? Thanks for any suggestions. We have no garage and 4 vehicles that set out in the sun, ocean mist in the morning. They are all old, but would like to keep them from rusting or peeling their paint.

Dear Mr. Contruction Manager,

I asked you for a copy of the appraisal back in May and you NEVER answered my email. If you would have answered my email back in May, I wouldn’t have asked Mr. Michael Anthony of the title agency, and Mr. Anthony wouldn’t have told me that you did owe me a copy of the appraisal, and I wouldn’t have had to ask you again. So thank you for being prompt and professional by answering my email 2 months after I originally asked you.

It looks like (yet again) that we are back at square one. Suntrust Mortgage has created yet another big problem for us. We are requesting the 15.15 (which is the remaining portion of the ,000.00) to pay the contractor’s bills for work/s they have completed and to also obtain their releases to obtain the “CO” from Hillsborough County. Be aware that I do not have the exact amounts for the contractor’s bills. If you want that information, please call Mr. Chris Braglin from Braglin Builders INC. at 813-695-0685. Again, I do not know the exact amounts for the contractor’s bills, so don’t ask me because you already have my answer.

These are the contactor’s that I am aware of that need payment:

1) Sal Electric: Electrical contractor that has performed the electrical work for our house.

2) A/C Contractor: A/C contractor that has performed the A/C work for our house.

3) Euro-Shutters: Hurricane shutter contractor that has performed the work for our house.

4) TECO: Local electrical power supply company. A certain amount must be paid before they do the final connection/meter installation to the house.

5) Hillsborough County Government: They require a certain amount of money to be paid for “Impact Fees” and/or etc… before they provide and/or release the “CO”.

6) Landscaping: Hillsborough County Government requires a certain amount of trees, grass, driveway and/or etc… before they provide and or release the “CO”.

7) Others: If any you can obtain those from builder.

Before we started the process/hassle to request the ,000.00, we had an ending balance of ,766.03 (according to Ms. Irene Hooper office meeting on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 11:00AM EST) bringing our total to ,766.03. Your company led us to believe that we were going to receive the ,000.00 that we had requested, and maintain the balance of ,773.03. If you, or someone else in your company, would have followed their legal obligation of informing us that we would only receive ,584.85 (0.506%), and you and your company would be holding the remaining ,415.15 (0.493%), we would have most definitely went another route. I don’t understand how you and your company, fully knowing that we were approximately ,000 short of finishing the construction of our home, let us apply for the ,000 we need to finish our house, only to give us half and leave us in the exact same position (if not worse) then we were in before we applied for the increase. We feel that your company intentionally tricked us. We do not like this situation at all and it doesn’t look like it’s going to end favorable. Like we have said before, and like we are saying again now, we do not have the money to pay out and wait for you and your company to reimburse us.

On top of those fiascos, you and your company want inspection after inspection after inspection after each “penny” draw for 0 a pop! We already don’t have the money to pay the electricians, the euro-shutter guys, the a/c guys, TECO, Hillsborough County, and all the landscaping things the county requires to obtain the “CO”, and you and your company wants to make the situation worse by charging us 0 for each “penny” draw? All of these inconveniences are going to cause my builder to pass the extension date of August 1st and then we will have to pay you and your company another 0 to receive another extension. Like you and your company aren’t making enough money off the interest we are paying on the mortgage! You and your company LOANED us the money for the house and most of these delays/problems we have been having were cause by you and your company changing our contract managers every couple of months. It’s become pretty clear that you and your company orchestrated these events to keep on ******* us.

We aren’t going to suggest anything. Tell us what you and your company is going to do (or not do) to solve this mess, since no matter what we try to do to get things going and get our house finished, you and your company finds another way to **** us. Like the interest we pay isn’t a ******* enough in itself…

Pissed Off,

Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous
i don’t the money for a lawyer btw

just need a few names

For those living in Florida, it is important to be familiar with and adhere to the basic three step hurricane preparedness plan.

STEP 1. Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at least three days.
STEP 2. Put these supplies into your car.
STEP 3. Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Thanksgiving.

Unfortunately, statistics show that most people will not follow this sensible plan. Most people will foolishly stay here in Florida. We’ll start with one of the most important hurricane preparedness items:

HOMEOWNERS’ INSURANCE: If you own a home, you must have hurricane insurance. Fortunately, this insurance is cheap and easy to get, as long as your home meets two basic requirements:

(1) It is reasonably well-built, and…
(2) It is located in Nebraska.

Unfortunately, if your home is located in Florida, or any other area that might actually be hit by a hurricane, most insurance companies would prefer not to sell you hurricane insurance, because then they might be required to pay YOU money, and that is certainly not why they got into the insurance business in the first place.

EVACUATION ROUTE: If you live in a low-lying area, you should have an evacuation route planned out. (To determine whether you live in a low-lying area, look at your driver’s license; if it says "Florida", you live in a low-lying area.)

The purpose of having an evacuation route is to avoid being trapped in your home when a major storm hits. Instead, you will be trapped in a gigantic traffic jam several miles from your home, along with two hundred thousand other evacuees. So, as a bonus, you will not be lonely.

Of course these are just basic precautions. As the hurricane draws near, it is vitally important that you keep abreast of the situation by turning on your television and watching TV reporters in rain slickers stand right next to the ocean and tell you over and over how vitally important it is for everybody to stay away from the ocean.

Good luck, and remember: It’s great living in Paradise!

Their was a tornado locally, so I decided to investigate it and shoot photos of it. However, the police had the public roads leading into the town closed. I was unable to go to where I wanted to get the photos I needed. They let other vehicles and media through. But I was unable to. I was however allowed to park and walk. While there was debris, the roads were drivable. And as I mentioned they allowed some people to drive through but not others. I even came through one road one way, but for some odd reason, they would not let me go back through. I had to find an alternative route home.
Can they prevent people from going through towns that are disaster area’s like this? Don’t photojournalists have certain rights? Can they allow some media outlets but not others? And how do you go about getting access as other journalists, media, construction workers, or insurance agents have? It seems like some photographers are allowed full access but others aren’t.
And how would one acquire a press pass? When I spoke with a photographer with one of the local papers in the past about getting a position with the paper or as an independent photographer for them, I would need to have a portfolio first. Well it’s hard to start one when your unable to gain access to these types of situations. I thought press passes were simply documentation from the paper or media company you are working for to state your with them, nothing being of an official government type of credentials. I didn’t think they were needed for these types of events.
I asked a question, but apparently people would rather insult and discourage others while not even trying to better the situation for other photographers.
Hokielover01, I’m sorry, but where do you have the right to tell others what they are qualified for or not especially when you do now know anything about the person. I guess it must be a ego issue on your part, or maybe you are just scared someone could do a better job then you can do?
First of all, just because you have a press pass for some newspaper does not mean you know anymore then someone else. I do realize the risks. I think I am more then competent to understand the dangers of power lines and other risks. And more likely more then you.
First of all, I am a professional photographer. God forbid If I wanted to supplement my income by doing some freelance photojournalist work. I would like to know how I would get in the way of some idiot like you? I think I have a little more processional courtesy then that, but I guess you couldn’t realize that because I asked a question.
It’s people like you that actually ruin photographers good names. Its also people like you that think because you have a camera and can snap pictures of a disaster you think you’re a real photographer. Now I truly understand why photographers say photojournalists have no real photography skills. Because obviously with your quick to putdown attacks, you are a pretty defensive because your obviously very scared.

We are leaving on a cruise to Western Carbbean out of Miami on Saturday. What is the lastest about the storm that you hear?

I read about a tribe of people who lived on the east coast of Argentina (I think) The area had the same weather as Boston. They lived without clothes or shelter. I think they ate mostly fish. Then they had some contact with the Christians, who clothed them and taught them to build shelters. They then got sick and got all kinds of skin diseases. They isolated themselves but went back and forth between the new and old ways with varying success. At the height of this culture there were about 40,000 of these unique people. I can’t find the reference to them.

Hello

I am quite new with hurricanes as I am not floridian… and I have difficult hurricane shutters to install (not the nice accordeon ones).
I did not put the shutters so far since it seems that Fay is going on the North west… but should I do ?
It is raining quite a lot now and it is the night :-(

Thanks for your answers!
