This will be my first time having a horse over the winter in this kind of climate. I live in Eastern Washington, and it gets very cold and it snows a lot here during the winter as well - last winter there were periods of time where we had feet and feet of snow on the ground.

I’m worried, specifically because we board my horse a drive away - it’s a drive i probably won’t be able to make at all during the winter, because i don’t have 4WD and the road is none to good. The people i board with live on-site and i am planning on paying them extra each month to feed, water, and check on my horse when i can’t make it out there.

Naturally i’m concerned though, and i want to know what i can do or provide to make it more likely that my horse will do well over the winter - that are still economical, because i’m not in the best financial situation right now.

My main questions are - in cold weather where things freeze right away, what can i do to ensure that her water stays liquid? There is no hot water access in the barn - is there some tip or trick or something i can do to her water trough or a bucket that would make it not freeze over?

I’m also worried about the turnout area right outside of her stall. It’s likely to get icey, and it slants downhill. My horse had a previous pastern injury from barrel racing and goes very ’stiff’ on her front right leg in cold weather, which makes me doubly concerned about this area and the dangers it poses, but at the same time she can’t be on 24/7 turnout in the flat area because she will need the shelter of the stall. Is there something i can do regarding the icey downhill area (or provide, and have them do), to make it safer?

Is there anything else that i should have or buy that would make things easier over the winter?

Lastly, i know she needs hay… i’m not sure how much to get for her. I usually buy orchard/bromegrass mixed round bales that are 750 lbs apiece… how many of those should i purchase to be ready for winter, assuming it starts snowing in mid-late october, and continues until at least march/early april?

She’s a 15.1HH arab/paint cross, maybe 1000#?

I’m sorry if these seem like stupid questions but i’m from Texas originally and there isn’t much of a winter there, so i’ve never had to deal with freezing or snow or winter hay consumption. =/
I’m not sure about South Dakota, but i can tell you it does get freezing and below here often, and i saw the boarding place towards the tail end of winter and the downhill slanting turnout was covered in a thick sheet of ice. Last winter there was like 3-4 feet of snow on the ground and i got frostbite from being outside for like 15 minutes at dusk, so it can get really cold here…

I cannot figure out the answer to this question. If anyone could help me out, that would be great!

Explain whether each of the following events will increase, decrease, or have no effect on long-run aggregate supply.

a) The United States experiences a wave of immigration
b) Congress raises the minimum wage to per hour
c) Intel invents a new and more powerful computer chip

I need help!

Im doing a Hurricane Project for TX History and I really dont know what to do.

So Far all I have is this:

The time of year is here. Hurricane Season. Except, this may be the strongest hurricane Galveston has ever experienced. Hurricane Celenia is on its way! Officials say that Hurricane Celenia is a category 5 at the moment, but may change to a category 4 when it hits dry land. Winds will be up to 154 MPH. The Hurricane was located at 86 latitude and 23 longitude October 2, 2009, and is planning to hit Galveston October 12, 2009 at 2:42 am

A rare fire tornado has been seen in the Brazilian state of Sao Paolo. A whirlwind of flame, spiralling several metres high, danced across burning fields, bringing traffic to a halt on a nearby highway. This unusual phenomenon has been caused by a combination of wildfires and strong dry winds following weeks of drought in the country. Authorities in Brazil are struggling to contain the fires and have banned farmers from burning waste from the sugar cane harvest.

I have what they’d call a semi-handled rat. He’s an adult and quite aggressive. I try to take him out of his cage and he won’t budge, instead he bites my fingers as hard as he can. I don’t know weather to tame him or send him to an animal shelter.

After 3 yrs he took me to Venice and proposed. Heaven. The only strange thing was that he didnt like me spending the nights at his house except saturdays or half term holidays. I saw him nearly every night and we were always together. His family and mine were happy or us. He told me quite early on that he would like to work abroad at some point. I spent most of my time trying to find a job abroad so we could go together. My only stipulation was he try and go to an english speaking country as this gave me a good chance of finding a job as well as I wanted him to have his dream. After 5 or 6 years, I mentioned isnt it about time we started thinking about living tgether? He said that he was scared of living together so I agreed how about we try
me staying more than 1 night a week t start off with as we are together all the time on holidays and it has never been a problem. He agreed but it never happened. After 6 years like this my family and his started to say he was using me as we did everything couples do except live together. They constantly questioned me about where we were going, if we had a future etc. They semed to blame me where it was his decision to not have us move in. I told him to please talk to them as I was under so much pressure from everybody. Last year I lost my job unfairly and was considering legal action. I was in such a mess and told him he could do better than me as I was a nothing and a nobody (I was very depressed) After 5 weeks I found another job but found out he had secretely asked another girl out. He said he was so sorry,it was becuase I said he could do better. We stayed together, I said we need to move this relationship up as engaged now for 4 years and still no
improvement on living together. I decided to get out from the pressure of my parents and buy my own home. He agreed and helped me with the deposit saying we would have our own place (even though he already lives alone) so he could live with me. During this his pal, became ill with Cancer - he dealt with this by cutting himself off from me saying he was going through a terrible time and his job was possibly being cut too. I said should we have a break so he could deal with the situation, he said he couldnt handle any external pressure namely me as I was asking him when I coud stay the night (getting angry in the process as he didnt undertsand why I felt used for sex) After two months of not seeing him properly, I asked him what was going on and he said everytime he saw me he gets stressed out. I have stood by him through two fatal accidents, his workload, his ups and downs etc and was finally at breaking point. I found out that a younger girl (20 yrs
younger) had asked him out and he was seeing her. she told me to get lost he was with her now!!

She text me lots of vindictive messages and he did not stop it. He said he was at his lowest when he met her and wants us to get back together. the house I bought went through when he was with her. I am on my own now doing it up, his work found out about them and sacked him. He has now had to move away for work. Is this my fault and how do I get us back together.
When I asked him why he did this, he said because I told him I would be leaving after another year if things didn?t change a bit, also he was at his lowest point in life because of his pal dying. He told me he only got engaged to me to keep me until somebody better came along. After 6 months we started talking again and he said he didnt mean anything he said. have now found out he is seeing somebody abroad; I saw their photo on face book. I confronted him and he has just said he doesnt want to hurt me.

Now though, he is with this other woman moving on. The girl he cheated on me with has moved onto her next target without a care in the world. I am left holding the bag all on my own. She broke us up like a tornado and has now left a path of destruction. How do I get my life on track, I have not many pals and am very alone. I see her everywhere happy and smiling whereas I have just lost the bset thing I ever had and I cant cope with the loss. Her ex told me she is destructive. She breaks up families and moves on. Now my guy and I are in different countries and moving on. How do I move on to? I just cant take this.

If a severe hurricane hits Florida, destroying large amounts of the citrus crop, what is most likely the effect of this on aggregate supply?

I’d like to know.(:

I’ve heard that from the weather channel, that experts predicted an active hurricane season in the Atlantic this year, but i’m not seeing anything. This year, we’ve only had 1 hurricane, and 1 tropical storm. It’s been probably 2 months since the beginning of the season, but not much activity.. why

Congress gets it wrong on energy! Again
Congress seems intent to pass a regressive energy bill — despite the pleas of their constituents for releif at the pump. The truth is that, short of a moratorium on federal gas taxes, there is very little Congress can do to provide short-term releif at the pump but they could help ensure plentifiul supplies of oil and gas — and thus lower prices — in the future, but instead they seem intent to make our situation worse.
The National Petroleum Council recently released a report http://www.npc.org/7-18_Press_rls-post.pdf painting a fairly bleak picture for the world’s energy supply and demand equation. One way Congress could help would be to remove hurdles to domestic oil production on public lands like ANWR and on the OCS and from non-traditional sources like oil shale and coal to oil. Despite what industry proponents argue, these sources don’t need subsidies or a price floor to get going (but who doesn’t want guaranteed profit if they can get Congress to give it to them), but they do need the government to reduce hurdles to development on public lands — and more importantly, not make the situation worse with new legislative roadblocks or make the investment situation worse by rescinding reasonable standards for the depreciation of new equipment.
In light of high prices and declining domestic production, in the 2005 energy bill Congress sought to encourage new production by expediting the leasing of new oil and gas wells on public lands and off-shore by giving new funding and fast-track authority to the Bureau of Land Management and the Minerals Management Service, while reducing the bureaucratic paperwork requirements in order to ensure that proposals for new production were assessed, and contracts written, in a timely fashion – a statutory deadline for approval was built into the law. In addition, in order to encourage companies to build expensive, new platforms in high risk areas in the hurricane prone gulf of mexico, where dry wells are not uncommon, the government decided to treat oil and gas companies on the same par as renewable energy firms, allowing them to write off or accelerate the depreciation on capital equipment for new investments in production in the Gulf of Mexico.
The new Democratic Congress wants to take all that away. In order to increase revenues to the government to fund their green priorities – none of which will bring much energy online and so help consumers – they wish to end the accelerated depreciation, extend the time federal agencies have to consider new leases and increase the paperwork hurdles. Each of these steps will discourage or slow the development of new oil and gas projects and thus slow (or even halt in some cases) the delivery of new oil and gas resources to the marketplace – high prices will remain high or rise as we become even more dependent on foreign energy supplies. In addition, they want to impose higher fees on new production and, not allow energy companies unwilling to renegotiate leases drawn up under the Clinton Administration to bid on new leases.
When energy prices were low and new domestic production cost more than companies could make, the Clinton administration, in order to encourage continued exploration, wrote off-shore leases that that did not require companies to pay royalties. Now, when prices are high, the government wants to force companies to break their contract, and pay royalties on oil produced in the past. This does nothing to produce new oil, shows government to be an unreliable partner thus giving companies less assurance when dealing with the government that the deals written will be kept, and will likely keep well qualified companies from bidding on new leases. Under this deal, unless qualified companies accede to extortion, they will not be able to get new leases, which means there will be less competition and less production (or higher priced production). Only Congress could think this will help our energy situation. Worst of all, these policies will be most damaging to the poorest of the poor. They amount to a hidden tax on the most vulnerable among us. Families earning more than ,000 per year spend just 4 percent of their income to cover all energy costs. By comparison, households earning between ,000 and ,000 per year spend 13 percent on their income on energy overall, and families earning below ,000 per year spend as much as 29 percent of their incomes on energy. While the relatively wealthy can afford higher gas prices with little impact on their lifestyles – they will still take vacations, and don’t have to decide between food, medication and fuel – poorer households are beginning to make that trade-off every day. This bill will do nothing to reduce energy prices or produce more energy and it will impose unconscionable new costs on the poorest among us.

I live in Savannah, GA. Nothing major enough to warrant evacuation has hit this area since I lived here, so I really have no idea where a hurricane shelter is locally. With Hurricane Hanna expected to hit pretty close to us around Friday afternoon, I have been watching the weather very closely, literally holding my breathe. I pray it doesn’t hit here but if it does can anyone tell me where to find hurricane shelters for my family and I?

P.S. Negative responses will be reported. My family and I are in a potentially dangerous situation and are genuinely asking for help. The last thing I need is someone heartless answering with some BS response. So if you don’t have anything constructive to add don’t answer. Thank you.

I live in Orlando and they are obsessing about this tropical storm Fay and it’s hardly even as bad as the thunderstorms we get. I know it’s worse if you live by the ocean but I feel they go overboard with it sometimes. I was born and raised here and a lot of the time they do exaggerate things. It seems like the media gets excited about hurricanes or tropical storms.

Alrighty, I’ll be creating topics within the next few months basically every time something stronger than a tropical wave (storms or hurricanes) poses a serious threat to Barbados. I might do it also within the other Caribbean countries depending on how much i like the particular island.

I’m not a meteorologist nor am i a God. So please listen to bulletins regular along and our local meteorologist. The info i put up is subject to errors and flaws and is not intended to be used as a safety bible. I’m however gonna interpret what i see on weather maps, computer simulators, provide links and give the best possible advice i could.

I’ll advice everyone though to find out who’s in charge of your zoning area for the district emergency organisations just incase of an emergency you would know where to go and who to contact..

Also Subscribing to www.barbadosweather.org a good idea it sends u live updates of when the island is under a flood watch, hurricane watch etc and it also sends you updates every time the weather changes. *which is pretty damn regular* so beware of alot of emails.

It’s an informative post so if anyone have any questions feel free to ask me.
Nice article Adela

William R Freudenburg made a presentation in which he stated that climate change is worse than expected. I find that a very odd statement to make.

http://aaas.confex.com/aaas/2010/webprogram/Paper1639.html

Temperatures are not rising faster than expected. Phil Jones the keeper of the HadCru temperature data set said that we have experienced statistically insignificant warming over the past 15 years, slight cooling over the past eight, and this latest warming trend is the same as some of the previous 20-30 warming trends of the past 150 years. So it can not be warming that is worse than expected.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8511670.stm

However, there are others that are now saying that ocean heat content (OHC) is a better indicator of warming than air temperatures. Admittedly there is a large one year spike in OHC, but that occurred at a time when they changed the way they gathered the OHC data. This has resulted in many uncertainties for the period 2000-2005. But over the past five years it has dropped.

http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/OC5/3M_HEAT_CONTENT/

Hurricanes, predicted to get worse, have not materialized.

Droughts are not getting worse. In a recent abstract by Sheffield et al in the Journal of Climate they wrote:

“Globally, the mid-1950s showed the highest drought activity and the mid-1970s to mid-1980s the lowest activity.” That does not seem consistent with the story coming from the IPCC.

So how is climate change worse than expected?
Dana: If I had said that the globe is not warming because of the error bars in the data, you would have called me a denier.

If I had used a web site that used outdated data, like skeptical science has, you would have called be a liar.

Your Himalayas link does not say anything about glaciers melting faster than expected.
Dana: One of the peer reviewed papers that skeptical science sites, S. Levitus et al., is used as a justification for revising the OHC down. In the NODC link, check out the published paper link.

I have a stray cat that I’ve been feeding since I’ve moved in my house. The only reason I haven’t taken it in is because my landlord lives down the street and we’re not supposed to have pets in the house. I called a local shelter, but they refused to take the cat because the cat is an adult, which I think is complete BS. I haven’t called the police shelter because the one here holds animals for 1 month. If no pick up, they euthanize them, which is also BS in my eyes. Anyways, this morning, before work, I went outside to warm up my car and the cat was on my porch on my lawn chair that has a pillow and she was in such a tight ball, you could tell she was cold. I put out a small blanket for her so she could get warmer on it. Anyways, what I’m wondering is, how to strays manage to stay warm in cold weather?

BTW, I’m an extreme animal lover which is why I choose to feed strays, whereas other people would rather them starve…So yeah…LOL! Thanks!

On Monday, BNVN Weather Paparazzi Eric Treece was chasing one of the several tornadoes that formed in eastern Colorado along Highway 71 south of Brush, CO. In the footage, Eric is standing underneath a rope tornado that is less than a quarter mile away from him on the ground and rises up and extends over him as it goes up to the cloud base. The video pans back to the ground and back up to the cloud base to show how large and how long the tornado actual is. As you watch this footage, note that the tornado from the clouds does extend to the ground but there is rotation on the ground. The condensation funnel of the tornado is invisible until it touches the ground and throws debris into the air. To license this footage, contact www.bnvn.com
