Storm chasers captured the massive tornado that leveled Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Storms across the South have killed at least 178 people. (April 28)

Storm chasers recorded a powerful tornado in Chickasha, Oklahoma southwest of Oklahoma City. Authorities say a woman died when a tornado hit a mobile home park there, while a dozen people were injured, and hundreds were displaced. (May 25)

Footage from Hurricane Ivan. Ivan made land fall on September 16, 2004 as a Category 3 storm. It was the 10th most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and the 6th costliest to the United States.

Who just 6 years ago were writing ’scholarly opinions’ that soon snowfall in the U.S. would be a ‘rare occurance’????

E-mails exchanged to tell collegues that if the data doesn’t fit the projections, then just delete the data…
If it’s to hot it’s global warming…
If it’s to cold it’s global warming…
If it doesn’t snow enough it’s global warming…
If it snows to much it’s global warming…
Every year predict massive hurricane season due to global warming…
When year passes quietly blame lack of activity on global warming…

But Al Gore’s bank account just gets bigger and bigger due to global warming…

Anyone else see a trend here?

At least two people have been killed and dozens more injured when a tornado tore through Auckland in New Zealand. This amateur footage captured the twister as it made its destructive way through the country’s largest city. Witnesses reported cars being flipped over, and roofs ripped clean from buildings. Okay so here’s what i have:

flashlights
candles
goldfish
cereal
water
fig newtons
juice
seltzer
batteries
charger computer and ipod
food to cook on the grill
board games
ice

What else should I have in terms of supplies?

Okay, I have this thing where I NEED to bathe every single day or else I go crazy. How can I keep clean? I have my bathtub filled with water and I filled a bunch of empty cartons with water to use. What else I can do?

like should i tape them or open them a tiny bit so the pressure wont brake them?
and what does: board up the windows mean?

Why would Cantor apply this caveat onto aide for those effected?
Anyone care to answer the question as to why he wants to add these requirements before he agrees to release any money?
Mark, there are no quotes from Cantor in my question.

1. Joe wants to see if it is true that hurricane induce labor in pregnant women. He collects data from several hospitals for births during the months of June-November (hurricane season). He compares this data with the dates that hurricanes came withing a 100 mile radius of his town. He graphs his results as the average number of births on hurricane days compared to the average number on non-hurricane days during the hurricane season months.

2. Josh wants to find out if higher temperatures cause mosquito larvae to develop more quickly. He sets up 6 tanks of mosquito larvae in the lab. Each tank has water of a different temperature ranging from 50-100 degrees Celsius. He graphs the number of adult mosquitoes in each tank after a 2 week period.

ok, as we all know hurricane ike has shut down refineries in texas. and you know how it goes, the gas jumps up a dollar and all of that, people are rushing out and getting gas and shutting down gas stations everywhere and leaving poorer people like me out to dry. they are only raising the prices even futher by doing that. what are your opinions?

I know this year the Gulf Coast had more hurricanes than normal, just like in 2005. I recently heard that that predicts it will be a colder than normal winter. Does anyone know if this is true or not? I really hope it is because I want it to snow here in Houston again. I can’t remeber what the winter of 05 was like, but I don’t remember it being that cold. Can anyone tell me if it may be colder this year or refer me to a good website that talks about this theory? Thanks!

Hurricane Irene remains on course to batter the east coast of the United States this weekend, as extraordinary images from space reveal the scale of the powerful storm. Irene strengthened to a Category Three storm, with winds of 120mph (195km) as it continued to wreak havoc across the Caribbean and edged towards the US mainland. Live television pictures from the International Space Station, orbiting the earth 200 miles up, showed the sheer size of Irene’s cyclonic cloud. Irene could be upgraded to a Category Four - classified as having winds of up to 155mph - within 24 hours. The first hurricane of this year’s storm season is expected to gather power as it races across the warm waters of the Caribbean in the next 48 hours. Forecasters say it could threaten densely populated centres in the north-east, including New York and Philadelphia, with its predicted path also passing close by major tourist destinations on the coast of the Carolinas. It is expected to miss Florida and Georgia. Bill Read, director of the US National Hurricane Centre, said: “The exact centre of the storm may actually stay pretty close to the coastline during the day on Saturday and then become a big threat for New England and perhaps Long Island on Sunday. “Be advised, it is going to be a very large circulation as it moves north of the Carolinas.” Irene would be the first hurricane to make direct landfall in the United States since Hurricane Ike hit Texas in 2008, and authorities have warned people to

Officially, this weekend’s dedication ceremony for the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C. was postponed due to Hurricane Irene.

Not so, according to Detroit Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley. Instead, the late civil rights leader sent the massive storm to shutter the celebration and force everyone to pause and self-reflect amid the pervasive violence, racism and pornography in our society.

Riley wrote:

First, there was an earthquake. Then there was a hurricane. What in the world could be going on?

Nothing in the world. That was just Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., above the world, shutting down the celebration, getting our attention and telling us to take a good look at ourselves.

If King were here today, she said, he would be “roiled with righteous anger and sadness” because of:

• Black teens running around, beating people in Philadelphia and Milwaukee flash mob violence.

• The trial of the men who beat Vincent Kee, a gentle, mentally disabled man in Albuquerque, N.M., and then branded him with a swastika.

• Black teens dropping out of schools in Detroit, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Gary, Ind., in numbers too obscene to say aloud.

• Three white men, on a mission to hurt a black person, driving to Jackson, Miss., and beating an innocent 49-year-old James Anderson, then driving their Ford F-250 pickup over him to kill him.

All of this in addition to:

• The soft-core porn that passes as programming on MTV, VH1 and BET.

• Widespread unemployment at a rate higher than in 1963 when he gave his “I Have a Dream” speech on the National Mall.

• A magazine editor calling America’s first president of color the slang word for penis on national TV.

Therefore, with this in mind, King “didn’t think we were ready to celebrate today” and instead, “the raindrops on the King monument today will represent the tears of the lions who went before and left this world hoping that better would come after.”

Whenever the dedication is rescheduled for, she said, hopefully we’ll have “a better report to show.”

Okay, it is said that Hurricane Irene is going to be in Massachusetts on Sunday with winds up from 96 to 110 mph. Overall, how bad will this be? I’m freaking out because I got two siblings to take care of, my parents are stereotypically Asians so we don’t have supplies yet, and they prefer to go to work instead of staying home. My guitar, computer, and my Line 6 amp is my life, so it’s going to be a pain to carry them down to the basement.

I want to take the data from NOAA’s 5-day hurricane Irene path forecast (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/211341.shtml?gm_track#contents) and see how close they predict it will come to New York from when NYC first shows up on the path to when the hurricane actually passes.

I could figure it out it x-y coordinates on a flat surface, but I don’t know how to figure it out using latitude and longitude on a globe. And I don’t know how working with segments on a great circle affects things. Basically I know I have to find the point on the path that is on the line going through NYC that is perpendicular to the path.

For instance, NYC is at 40.7 N, 74.0 W.
The two points on the projected path are: 36.5 N, 75.0 W and 42.0 N, 71.5 W. Eyeballing a map, it looks about 45-50 miles.

I have about 15 projections to calculate with.

Thanks in advance. Any help would be much appreciated!

i will be goin to orlando florida this week and i know there is a hurricane in the gulf does anyone know if it will hit orlando florida

i’ve been sheltering a young oppossum for the winter and now that the weathers nice, i decided to set it free. will it be able to feed itself? what do they usually eat in the wild?
im a bit concerned for it since its really clumsy at walking and climbing. its been living in the house with me and 2 dogs, dont know how i pulled that off.
o i should probably mention, it was a wild possum when my dogs found it sitting in the snow

I’m living in a New Jersey and they said we were going to get it hit the most. We have not been told to evacuate yet only the shore has. We are are not told to evacuate so if we stay in the house what do we do if like the wind blows the windows out, the roof off or a tree falls onto the house? Do you take the risk and run over to the neighbors, do you stay put and hope you don’t die?

Brandon Sampson and Jeremy Wilson for Holy Tornado went out on March 8 2010 on almost no setup at all and captured some nice footage of the Hammon Ok tornado as it stayed on the ground for ever it seemed. Briefly afterwards the same storm spawned another smaller twister that we also got great video of as it almost passed right over us had it stayed in contact with the ground!!!!

I live in Detroit but my friend lives in Philadelphia. I keep hearing about the disaster that Hurricane Irene is going to be for them and seeing people scramble for supplies and stuff. Is there anything I can do to help my friend? I don’t want anything to happen to them.

I want to know what happen in Irene? (Hurricane Irene) I have this blog due and I really would like to know what happen? what damages have occurred? how many people have died? what countries have been hit? etc. I would like to know everything. I’d appreciate it! THANKS! :D Hurricane Irene (2011)

Thoughts please??

I live just outside of NYC. A group of friends and I had decided several weeks back to all get together this weekend at a rental home in CT (Windham County). The plan was to drive the 3 hours there this evening (Friday) after work and come home Sunday. I know Irene’s path and intensity keeps changing but I can’t decide if I should go or not, and I want to hear others’ opinions…

Some factors:
- I haven’t seen these friends in a long time, and will likely not be able to see them again in a long time
- The shortest route home takes 3 hours and would be on I-95, which is rather close to the projected center of the storm
- I could take an alternate route which brings me farther inland to a Tropical Storm Watch Zone (rather than a Hurricane Zone), but this would take 5 hours and still likely be bad weather
- I could drive up tonight (3 hours) and leave tomorrow afternoon and be home before the worst of the storm (but then is all the driving worth it?)
- My friends are all still going and seeing tomorrow if it changes and whether its safe to stay or if they should leave early….

Thoughts? Thanks! and be nice please!

Oh, also, I just got the oil changed and everything else all checked so the car can handle rain
Whoops! Forgot something important:

This Monday is my first day at a new job, so I can’t really afford to get stranded somewhere. I definitely have to come home at least by Sunday…

I live in Miami is she coming I’m so scared and should me and my family evacuate I have shutters on all the windows and everything else what do i do IM SO SCARED
