It is much rarer that a nationwide ideological swing happens, the last time you could argue that it really happened was conservative Reagan in the 1980s, and before that liberal Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930s. And these ideological shifts were triggered by incompetence of the party in power, the failure of Hoover allowed Roosevelt and his liberal New Deal ideas to gain popularity, and the failure of Carter allowed Reagan's conservative ideas to become popular.</description>
