Hurricane Questions Archives

Asking for experienced answers - I live in Palm Beach Gardens in an apartment complex on the second floor.. I have a sliding glass door and numerous large windows.. just curious that if a hurricane does hit, do I need to take further precautions, or would my impact glass suffice (new to the area, will be first hurricane haha) Thanks!
i forgot to add this if it matters.. my complex is only about 4 years old…

I am trying to put up aluminun shutters and don't know how far outside the window I have to be. Do I just cover the window? Or do I go a few inches further? Please help me. I have never done this before. How far are the headers supposed to be?

We got hit by hurricane Rita almost 2 years ago and we still have a blue tarp on our roof. We are renting and the owner of the house didn't have insurance on the house so we stll have a blue tarp covering it. I'm worried about this years hurricane season. I can't afford to move and I'm trying my best to safe up to get it fixed but in the meantime, how do I keep my house safe? No jokes please. I'm still trying to get mold spores out of the house.
Sorry to hear about all of that. FEMA said we had significant damage but said they couldn't help us because I forgot to include my middle name when I signed my name during the inspection of my house. They caontacted me 8 months after the hurricane, after is started raining in our house and leaks were everywhere and then they mentioned they could have helped us but I left out my middle name on my signature. I had to show proof who I was about 3 times and finally I got it straight but then I recieved a letter in the mail from FEMA saying I missed the deadline and they couldn't help us fix the roof. So now I am saving up to have it fixed.

via the Gulf of Oman. No hurricane has EVER struck this place before. Amazing. Watch gas go up to /gallon next week.

Good blog site above with lots of information and satellite imagery of the coastal areas.

I have to do a hurricane tracking chart for school on Gustav but I’m having trouble finding the coordinates. Which websites have them? I also need the miles per hour for each point. I need 10, 2 for each day.

Is there any way to send boxes of supplies to victims of Hurricane Ike and Katrina? I work for this group in a school in Brooklyn, NY, and would like to send supplies specifically to Hurricane relief efforts in Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

This would be for a private residence. With the cost could you tell me the approximate value being insured. I could use prices for both Orlando and Miami.

I thought I just read that it is hard or impossible to get now. I am not looking to buy any, I am just curious about some rough numbers.
I am really looking for a number. I am trying to figure out the approximate payback period if a home is constructed as a Category 5 hurricane structure.

FYI A Cat 5 structure is 6 inch poured concrete with #6 and #4 rebar. Cat 3 is concrete block with #6 every 5 feet or so with rebar cells filled with concrete. The other big difference will be the roof will be steel and concrete vs wood truss & shingle.
Can't someone just give me an example that they know of.

any nickname for the ones who fly though a hurrican when its the eye

I recently purchased a condo in Miami (Kendall, no where near the beach). When first looking at the apartment I asked about hurricane shutters and received strange looks from the owner, the real estate agent and the association representative. All told me that the association allowed them, but that I had no need for any since I had a balcony (12 ft long by 4 ft deep) and was on the second floor (building is four stories tall).
This doesn't make any sense to me. What do balconies and being on the second floor have to do with things hitting my sliding glass doors or windows? I thought the wind got worse the higher up you went.
Do I need hurricane shutters or not? If not, could you explain why?

Thanks!

I live in South Florida and can't find any independant test results to demonstrate whether this product really strengthens windows. I live on the 9th floor of a condo and am not worried about something flying into my windows. I just want to keep the windows from breaking in strong winds.

Im planning on moving to america in the next few years, and i know to expect hurricanes but i was just wondering what the most common hurricane category that florida was?

Blinds are not an option at this time.

I live in the Galveston Texas area.I filed a claim with my insurance company from the damage caused by Hurricane Ike. My homeowners insurance is not paying anything at all. Texas Wind Insurance Association is paying only for damage caused to the house itself, they are not covering my contents. Is there any insurance I could have purchased to cover my contents?

Some footage shot during the brunt of Hurricane Wilma outside our Naples, FL home, no we don’t live on a lake… About 8 minutes in our pool cage goes away…

THIS IS NOT MY LETTER I REPEAT THIS IS NOT MINE SO DONT ASSUME ANYTHING OTHER THAN THIS IS NOT MINE BUT THIS LETTER IS CAUSING A CONTROVERSIAL EVERY WHERE WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT THIS AGAIN THIS IS NOT MINE THANKS.

Hurricane Victims pay for their own rescues?
Current mood: aggravated

I am sorry, but I believe all these people should have to pay the bill for their individual rescues! When they issue a “certain death” warning and you are fucking dumb enough to stay, you do not deserve free aid. I watched people being interviewed on the news claiming they bought a bunch of beer and BBQ to sit through the storm. I bet these same people are crying for help as I type. This is fucking stupid! Why should we have to foot a dime for these dumbasses that ignored these warnings?

FREE transportaion was provided, many buses left half empty. FREE shelters were provided, many not filled up. People value MONEY and POSESSIONS more than their own lives? IDIOTS!

I feel like we reward stupidity in this country, and this is the perfect example of it. What do you guys think?

edited note:: I never said they should DIE, I said if they value their MONEY and POSSESSIONS more thn their own LIVES they should have to pay for endangering the lives of rescue workers, and sucking up more money this government DOESN’T have. someone claimed they didnt want to lose their job…I wasn’t aware the bank was open that day!”

My brother and sister inlaw aren’t too bright. With Tropical Storm Fay possibly being a Hurricane by the time it hits my family my mom is worried they won’t be properly prepared. What are some additional supplies one must have on hand for a baby?

Anything special you wouldn’t necessarily stock up on for just older kids/adults?
Also the baby gets congested very easily, needs a dehumidifier in his room at night….how can they keep him feeling well with no air conditioning if power is lost?

I need a hurricane tracking map for the state of Texas that includes the cities on the gulf coast. From Brownsville, Tx to Galveston, Tx.

how to prepare for a hurricane! what to do?at home

I'm interested in comparing poverty rates before and after Katrina in the affected counties but am having trouble getting good data. Can anyone help with this? Thanks.

I am planning to go to Universal Studios Orlando in Florida. But there is one problem. It is Hurricane Season! Should I go???

There's always a list of names for each season, but how are the names to go on these lists chosen?

Okay so I was wondering about what they do about cruises during a hurricane. Do they cancel the trip? I would think but do you need the cruise insurance to guarantee that you get your money back? I’ve always wondered about it when I travel.

I live in south florida and I need to have ALL window openings protected in case of a hurricane, which includes skylights (or I dont get my insurance premium reduced). I am getting shutters for all my other windows and sliding doors, What can I do with my skylights? I doubt, although I am unsure, that they are impact glass currently. Help!
