Tornado Archives

35 years worth of stuff of our own plus stuff accumulated over my parents’ lifetimes that we never look at because it’s all stored in boxes or books. I’d like to archive the originals more carefully and have digital versions to see. I know how to store the originals better, and I can get the digitals onto flash drives or cards to use in the electronic frames, but what is the best way to store electronic files -the most likely to be read 5 or ten years from now and the least likely to decay in the event that the originals get hit by a west-Texas tornado or the like.

Thanks.
KRS
It’s hard for me to know which answer is "best" since I have no basis on which to judge. I’m going to pick one of the first answers.
Sorry I can’t pick more than one…I appreciate all the suggestions, and by the way, no longer do "thumbs down" on answers you took the time to post. I"m still not sure if "dvd" "cd" or "blu ray" is the best medium, but I think that makes better sense than the external hard drive, too. I will send copies to family members in other states, as well.

Thanks to you all.
Karen

A surveillance camera captures a tornado ripping through Parkersburg, Iowa.

One mile wide wedge tornado from near Yazoo City, Mississippi on April 24, 2010. Intercepted the tornado near Holly Bluff just east of the Mississippi River, and tracked the huge wedge to the damage path in Yazoo City, after which we assisted with the rescue effort until emergency personnel gained control of the situation. You’d think tornadoes like that only form in the Midwestern US There’s actually a few recorded tornadoes that reach F5 level every year in central Canada, where it’s also very flat, but there’s rarely any injuries or deaths. I thought the pictures I picked out were really cool, I’d never think tornadoes like that would form in Canada. Sorry about the audio being disabled, I hope you’ll still enjoy the video.

“Tornado Alley,” the film that’s being called the most anticipated giant-screen release of the past decade, premieres today in six venues across the country, including the Cincinnati Museum Center’s Robert D. Lindner Family Omnimax Theater.

Footage and pictures I took of Greensburg, Kansas as we drove through on July 5th, 2007 after the devastating F5 tornado that destroyed 95% of the town on May 4th, 2007. I also included 2 images I took of Greensburg when we drove through July 6th, 2004 which advertised the world’s largest hand dug well.

Clean up underway after tornado hits

Me and my friend snuck into this house through a window cause everything else was boarded down with wood. There seemed to be a fire, and the downstairs looks like a tornado blew over it.
I did a little research on the house after I got home. This is how it looks like now http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3515/3190484014_cca0e42432.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisanne001/sets/72157603701994222/&usg=__bela_cmABm4U4wrW9wtmD5i66mc=&h=375&w=500&sz=245&hl=en&start=0&sig2=H-aOtIg4UdAXyEZRFVK8ZA&zoom=1&tbnid=mo6MHMKHR8eS0M:&tbnh=139&tbnw=195&ei=qBl4TfifMYfDgQe7psjPBQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhouse%2Bon%2BOcean%2BParkway%2Bat%2BAvenue%2BU%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1I7DLUS_en%26biw%3D979%26bih%3D602%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=390&oei=qBl4TfifMYfDgQe7psjPBQ&page=1&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:11,s:0&tx=90&ty=121
The reason why we wanna fix and buy it is because it use to look like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisanne001/2503367760/in/set-72157603701994222/
Is it even possible for us to buy it? If so how much would repairs cost? And my friend is almost 18, I’m 16.
When my friend turns 18 she could buy it.

From an early age I have been a devoted storm chaser. Yes, if there’s threatening weather happening and I can get to it you can bet some pictures will taken of the atmospheric event. Makes no difference, lightning, thunder tornadoes, hail storms etc. I’m always outside with camera in hand to catch the action.

In the year 2008 while visiting the small town of Adrian Michigan a severe thunderstorm struck from out of nowhere thus, propping me to instantly go to the car for my digital camera. I took 20 or more pictures of this stormy sky quite unaware that I had accidentally caught something supernatural that would surprise the most skeptic critic.

It’s obvious that these letters or numbers? Were not met for only my interpretation therefore I chose to share them with the entire world. Too answer this question please review the photo on my Yahoo pulse homepage (Adrian Michigan 2008 letters in the sky) and tell me truthfully what you really think it could possibly all mean. Be honest thus remember, that any editing in a digital format (fraudulent computer enhancements) leaves undesirable signature distortions behind it. Therefore, it is next to impossible to modify a digital image without causing noticeable distortions in that same image.

The April 3, 1956 Hudsonville/Standale Tornado that killed 17 people and injured 300. This is the only known color movie footage of the tornado and was taken from just north of Lake Michigan Drive northwest of Grand Rapids. This is the earliest known film footage of a tornado suction vortex, which can be seen forming on the west (left) side of the main tornado funnel. Damage footage of northwest Grand Rapids follows. 8mm home movie shot by Eugene Dohm, courtesy of Jim Bird.

My good friend went on a walking tour of Plainfield, IL with his video camera to capture tornado devastation on September 1, 1990. This clip is from near St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Index of all the clips is at roytaylor dot info.

(This is a confirmed tornado: National Weather Service) I started filming to get an image of all the lightning, but then realized there was a black column from the sky down to the water on the left… The Statue of Liberty is barely noticeable directly above the tail end of the Pepsi truck. Notice how fast it all starts moving about a minute in… Then, watch the driving rain on surface of the water. There was a moment of snow that I think is not visible. The waves of what look like fog rolling is actually water in the air. I’m not sure if the building was hit with something… At one point I turn around and try to show the rug is being picked up by the draft from under the door… It’s all over in about 4 minutes.

F5 Tornado hits Andover Kansas April 26, 1991. This is my never before seen original video. (Note-Time on clock is 3 hours slow) This video shows 9 minutes in the life cycle of a deadly F5 tornado. The tape ends about one minute before the tornado destroys a large portion of Andover Kansas and completely wipes out the Golden Spur Mobile home park, killing 13 and causing many injuries. At about the 3:00 minute mark you can see it go into a multiple vortex stage followed by the formation of a large wedge tornado. My video of the aftermath is linked in the video responses found below.

All rights go to Fox and American Idol 2011, I own NONE of this video.

My 3rd Minitage!! Hope u enjoy!!
