We have had very heavy rain for the last two days. A lot of it has fallen in our mountains (well over 200mm) and it is melting the snow up there. This is sending heaps of water down the mountains and combining with the already saturated ground in lower towns.

The flood waters are rising and many of the roads are cut off. So hopefully most of the people camping at the show left last night when they could or they will be visiting our town for a while yet. 1000’s of homes are evacuated.

We are fine here, no major rivers near us. My grandmother has her horse standing up on a dam bank surrounded by water, hopefully it stops rising soon. If not we will take our cattle truck (only vehicle that might get through the waters?) to load up her horse, cattle and some sheep. We have offered our property as a horse evacuation point to people.

Floods are not new to me, as our horse stud was at the bottom of these mountains and used to flood every couple of years, often at peak breeding time. Keeping 500 horses safe was sometimes interesting, but we never lost any.

What weather emergencies have you had to keep your horse safe from? Floods, fires, tornados, cyclones?

They had an earthquake in New Zealand yesterday. Mother nature is not happy!

On our deck (suburbs) I discovered a mother cat with three kittens using a pile of wood and plastic sheet as shelter. Unfortunately, the wood and sheet had to be moved, and we had to do it at a time when the mom was away and only the kittens were there (not my choice). So when we started the move, the kittens predictably scurried away. Two ran out the yard-gate towards the front of the house, and one retreated further into the backyard out of view. We put the plastic sheet next to the shed, hopefully they can all go live under there if they want. But my concern is that the mom will not be able to find her kittens, especially since our backyard is fenced off (but with holes of course which is probably how the cats came in in the first place). My friend says the mom will find the kittens with no problem because they’re in the vicinity of my house and well, this is just the way it works. But I’m not so sure. There’s nothing I can do about it now, but I just hope that the mom finds the kittens, even if the family can’t survive the fall/winter weather, I would still feel better if the mom finds the kittens and they try to make it as best they can.

What are some of the jobs that involves investigating natural disasters. I want to know jobs that involve investigating hurricanes, tornadoes and cyclones. Like a meteroligist. PLEASE DONT SAY A STORM CHASER. something scientific. Thanks.

This will be my first time having a horse over the winter in this kind of climate. I live in Eastern Washington, and it gets very cold and it snows a lot here during the winter as well - last winter there were periods of time where we had feet and feet of snow on the ground.

I’m worried, specifically because we board my horse a drive away - it’s a drive i probably won’t be able to make at all during the winter, because i don’t have 4WD and the road is none to good. The people i board with live on-site and i am planning on paying them extra each month to feed, water, and check on my horse when i can’t make it out there.

Naturally i’m concerned though, and i want to know what i can do or provide to make it more likely that my horse will do well over the winter - that are still economical, because i’m not in the best financial situation right now.

My main questions are - in cold weather where things freeze right away, what can i do to ensure that her water stays liquid? There is no hot water access in the barn - is there some tip or trick or something i can do to her water trough or a bucket that would make it not freeze over?

I’m also worried about the turnout area right outside of her stall. It’s likely to get icey, and it slants downhill. My horse had a previous pastern injury from barrel racing and goes very ’stiff’ on her front right leg in cold weather, which makes me doubly concerned about this area and the dangers it poses, but at the same time she can’t be on 24/7 turnout in the flat area because she will need the shelter of the stall. Is there something i can do regarding the icey downhill area (or provide, and have them do), to make it safer?

Is there anything else that i should have or buy that would make things easier over the winter?

Lastly, i know she needs hay… i’m not sure how much to get for her. I usually buy orchard/bromegrass mixed round bales that are 750 lbs apiece… how many of those should i purchase to be ready for winter, assuming it starts snowing in mid-late october, and continues until at least march/early april?

She’s a 15.1HH arab/paint cross, maybe 1000#?

I’m sorry if these seem like stupid questions but i’m from Texas originally and there isn’t much of a winter there, so i’ve never had to deal with freezing or snow or winter hay consumption. =/
I’m not sure about South Dakota, but i can tell you it does get freezing and below here often, and i saw the boarding place towards the tail end of winter and the downhill slanting turnout was covered in a thick sheet of ice. Last winter there was like 3-4 feet of snow on the ground and i got frostbite from being outside for like 15 minutes at dusk, so it can get really cold here…

I have what they’d call a semi-handled rat. He’s an adult and quite aggressive. I try to take him out of his cage and he won’t budge, instead he bites my fingers as hard as he can. I don’t know weather to tame him or send him to an animal shelter.

I live in Savannah, GA. Nothing major enough to warrant evacuation has hit this area since I lived here, so I really have no idea where a hurricane shelter is locally. With Hurricane Hanna expected to hit pretty close to us around Friday afternoon, I have been watching the weather very closely, literally holding my breathe. I pray it doesn’t hit here but if it does can anyone tell me where to find hurricane shelters for my family and I?

P.S. Negative responses will be reported. My family and I are in a potentially dangerous situation and are genuinely asking for help. The last thing I need is someone heartless answering with some BS response. So if you don’t have anything constructive to add don’t answer. Thank you.

Please help me!!!

I have a stray cat that I’ve been feeding since I’ve moved in my house. The only reason I haven’t taken it in is because my landlord lives down the street and we’re not supposed to have pets in the house. I called a local shelter, but they refused to take the cat because the cat is an adult, which I think is complete BS. I haven’t called the police shelter because the one here holds animals for 1 month. If no pick up, they euthanize them, which is also BS in my eyes. Anyways, this morning, before work, I went outside to warm up my car and the cat was on my porch on my lawn chair that has a pillow and she was in such a tight ball, you could tell she was cold. I put out a small blanket for her so she could get warmer on it. Anyways, what I’m wondering is, how to strays manage to stay warm in cold weather?

BTW, I’m an extreme animal lover which is why I choose to feed strays, whereas other people would rather them starve…So yeah…LOL! Thanks!

My 6 year old cat is indoor/outdoor. She has never roamed off before. I have never seen her go far, only a few houses down. She comes home 2-3 times a day to eat and comes home to sleep. She has a colar/name tag. Today is the forth day she is missing in cold and rainy weather.

I think the worst part is not knowing what happened to her. Is she dead? Or alive? I know she has not been run over by a car because her dead body would be on the road and we would get a phone call if her body was picked up. It saddens me that I have no idea where she is, because if someone has her I think they would have called by now.

Sigh…..I would feel bad if she doesn’t come back and I didn’t do all I can do to find her! I have looked around my neighborhood and posted fliers. I have also called the animal shelter. It worries me, today I have seen a small flock of crows fly by. I was outside and followed them. They seemed to fly into a house a few houses down from mine. I will knock on there door to see if they have seen my lost cat.

Is posting fliers and calling the animal shelter about all I can do?
Have you ever lost a pet before? If so, did you find him/her?

would it change and circulate counter-clockwise if it migrated to the southern hemisphere?

When it lightly rains im packing to go to the storm shelter. If lighting comes, i start to cry, If i hear thunder i hyperventilate.

And if theres a tornado watch im out the door, even when my grandma and mom say no.

im 15 and im SCARED TO DEATH of even sprinkling rain.

Help?

Look at how many people are committing sins

Passing gay marriage, oops can I say that?

We got bad weather - Cyclone, Tornadoes in the South, Earthquake in China… I didn’t know China can get Earthquake.
Gas prices are going up.
Food and Stamp

Do you buy clothes and shoes and that kind of thing? Or do you have some kind of shelter structure similar to a carport? I am just curious, because I am training my dog outside, but my husband argues that during weather like this it will be difficult, so I am trying to figure out a game plan for when it occurs. I live in Oklahoma, so it can go from rainy-to sunny-to snowy here some days. I want to be prepared for Maxie’s sake as well as my own. He is a Maltese and so his fur isn’t very thick and they are prone to being weak to extreme weather. Thanks!
Yes, he is an indoor dog.
And I mean when you take the out to potty, not just taking them out in general. I wouldn’t make my dog go out in the rain or snow just for exercise. We can do that inside on those days.
I’m sorry, I didn’t proofread very well before I posted my question. I am training him to use the bathroom outside. He is primarily an indoor dog, and will never be living outside.

I am going to take a plane from Bariloche back to Rio de Janeiro, and to get to the GaleĆ£o Airport, we have to cross the South of Brasil. I checked the weather there and we’re supposed to have some heavy showers in that area satuday, the day I’m going home.

Is there anything wrong about it? I’m super-nervous. I’m not really confortable around airplanes. When we arrived here we had to cross an area near an extratropical cyclone and did that plane shook! I’m kind of scared now. Some help here, guys?

It was only to check on the conditions inside. I left out more wet food, catnip and promise not to do it again. :)

Actually, the weather has turn very cold and snowy, so I’m just more than happy and relieved to see it using the shelter !!! YAY for the ferals! HAPPY FERAL CAT DAY!! More TNR!
No, of course I’m not a troll. :). She was back on my porch for some dinner after being released from the spay, so I feel a little bad…but am still I’m counting on that appetite ! :) She’s around 6-7 months.

I can’t get my head around what weather low or high air pressures create or why depressions and anti-cyclones come about. And could someone explain the Tri-cellular model to me?

That would be absolutely brilliant.

Thanks.

I live in Utah where the summers can get up 99 and down to single digits in the winter, so I want that will be good in any weather. I realize that what kind of bedding is appropriate depends on the weather. I would appreciate any info you have on building and maintaining a shelter.
I’d also like know what bedding worked best and where some good locations would be to place the shelters. Also any websites that have anything to with cat shelters
I’ve never don e this before but I want to help the cats that are outside in this storm we’re having, so maybe they can have some dry and cozy to go to during the next one.
p.s. how do you get the cats used to the shelter

1 suggests that a cyclone and a mT air mass is approaching.
2 indicate the dominance of an anticyclone and cP air mass
3 is a consequence of the migration of the ITCZ into the forecast area

.HANNA EXITING THE REGION BUT CAUSING SIGNIFICANT LOW LEVEL
SHEARING TO PRODUCE POSSIBLE TORNADOES…

AT 619 PM EDT…NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A
LINE OF ROTATING SHOWERS SPINNING AROUND THE CENTER OF TROPICAL
STORM HANNA. AT 5 PM…THE CENTER OF HANNA WAS LOCATED OVER
SOUTHWEST SUSSEX COUNTY DELAWARE. NORTH OF HANNA…THE SHOWERS WERE
ROTATING COUNTERCLOCKWISE AND THE INTERACTION WITH THE LAND IS
CAUSING SIGNIFICANT LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE AND SHEAR TO PRODUCE
ROTATING SHOWERS THAT COULD PRODUCE SHORT LIVED VORTEX CENTERS OR
FUNNEL CLOUDS.

THESE ARE SHORT LIVED EVENTS AND IN SOME CASES VERY DIFFICULT TO
LOCATE ON RADAR. IF YOU SEE ANY SUSPICIOUS CLOUDS TAKE SHELTER
IMMEDIATELY.

I read it, and don’t get what they want us to do. Prepare for a tornado?

How do cold fronts produce stormy weather?

A.Warm moist air ahead of the front is uplifted as the front passes, causing the moisture to condense and precipitate.
B.Cold air behind the front causes the water vapor to evaporate, producing the storm.
C.The warm air mixes with the cold air along the front, creating low pressure and storms.
D.The cold air holds more water vapor than the warm air, thus it must precipitate out as rain or snow.

What is a wave cyclone?
A.It is a type of cold frontal uplift that occurs in waves along a squall line.
B.It is the rise in sea level of the water underneath a hurricane.
C.It is a spiraling storm system at the boundary between the polar air and the warm mid-latitude air.
D.It is the process of storm development over the mountains as air is uplifted by the mountain slopes.

I found a dead fox in an abandoned barn, it’s already pretty mummified. I was wondering how long it would take for the skin to naturally decay away so that I could mount the skeleton? Should it be removed from the shelter of the barn? I’m in Maine so the weather is in the upper 70’s now but when fall rolls around the decaying process might come to a halt?
Any advice is appreciated!
