Okay, so there are freaky weird snowstorms, they say they are historic. Then, a HUGE cyclone is hitting Australia, with them leaving because all shelters are packed up, then there was a flood in there too, and a threat of the California ‘Super Storm’/ And just now i n yahoo news, they have pics of Lightning and a volcano and stuff. No they said in 2012 when the world is supposedly supposed to end, they said freaky weather would pop up! What do you think of this?

i work at a zoo. the zoo director got 25 ponies in for future pony rides. these guys have been here for three months and some mares are expecting babies. no shelter from the weather and they basically live in their own shit. who can i contact to file a complaint?

I drive myself crazy worrying about animals being out in this freezing weather. Tonight it is going to be -20 degrees. Some don’t have shelter for there dogs or cats. I am sure if they don’t worry about there pets being warm they sure aren’t going to go out and feed them or give them water. How do I learn to cope? Is there anyone else out there that feels this way too?

my neighbor’s?
They have a pug. I have never actually met this family and talked with them as they are a odd family and don’t exactly socialize but from my window I can see there backyard. Anyways, the poor dog is left out almost ALL the time. Weather it is burring hot out, -10 out, snow storm, raining, hailing almost everything the dog is pretty much outside. I had just moved to my house about a year ago and the dog has been out pretty much every day I have lived in this house. The old owners had said something about the dog but they never had the guts to call.

I can’t see any food, water anything! I do think the dog gets let in sometimes but I mean it is crazy! When the weather is to hot or cold for me my dog only goes out when she has to do her thing!

I wake up in the night to hear the cries of that poor little dog!

I feel bad but I don’t know what to do!
Today it is so cold my kids weren’t allowed outside for lunch breaks at school because of the weather but the dog was outside!!!!
WHAT SHOULD I DO??
Thankyou everybody!

I was going to call but just wanted to make sure!!

I will be sure to call ASAP!

I noticed my 20 year old TB mare was showing signs of colic - pawing, kicking back legs forward, looking at her stomach, and laying down. This really freaked me out because I lost a 24 year old TB to colic in September (put down by the vet). Today is the first *really* cold day of the season. It’s -15c with a -25 windchill (5f/-13f), with the wind coming from the SE, so she had trouble finding a place out of the wind. The horse shelters face south or east. She was not shivering.

I got her on her feet, gave her 2grams of bute and put on her Weatherbeata rainsheet. I walked her for a moment, then left her. I watched her carefully from inside house (way too cold to stay outside!). She showed no colic symptoms after that. She rested, drank, rested again then ate some hay. She has been behaving normally ever since.

I’m thinking that the cold weather caused her to show colic symptoms? Have you ever had a horse do this before? (And no, I did not call the vet. She is fine now.)
My mare was showing classic signs of colic, which stopped abruptly as soon as she was blanketed. I can only conclude that the colic symptoms were caused by being cold. I’m not saying that she had colic, and in some sort of digestive tract upset, but that she had the the exact same symptoms.

This actually happened this afternoon. She was fine overnight, with lots of hay. She however had not been given fresh hay since that morning, although there was hay leftover from then.

As many of you already know, the weather here in NYC is getting dangerously cold, the past few days.
I know there are homeless shelters, but there are many who don’t go there. I know about 3 homeless guys in my neighborhood alone, who are ALWAYS outside (even in the 18 degrees Fahrenheit weather). I know another homeless guy near my job, but i think he’s mentally ill, I still don’t understand how he can manage the FREEZING weather while pushing his shopping cart back and forth!??

I remember about 2 years ago, a homeless guy got drunk and died in the cold. Why would today’s homeless take that risk?

A friend of mine is looking for good cold weather/some hot weather guard dog that is family friendly. He wants a dog of medium build and that is very intelligent and protective but has a good coat for different types of weather because he lives in a pretty rural area and he likes to go camping all year round, even in snow and rain. He wants the dog to have a higher cold tolerance but also be ok in the heat because he camps anywhere from 20 degrees to low 80’s, also, even when he’s not camping he does a lot of hiking and jogging, so the dog should have at least a medium or higher amount of energy. He was really looking into an akita but for several reasons that simply won’t work. He was interested in the GSD for a while but not anymore as they are among the highest to have hip dysplasia. He’s currently looking at a rottie but he’s heard they don’t have the best cold tolerance. Also he’s not sure about how common the hip dysplasia is with them, and if they are very hardy healthy dogs in general. He would buy a coat for the dog if it was going to be below freezing, but doesn’t want to be cutting it close. Does anyone know about rotties or other guard dogs in cold weather from experience?

He’s also considering a mutt of akita or shepherd but again is very worried about the chance of hip dysplasia becoming a big issue or some other huge health problem, as he can’t really check if the parents health records if he’s getting the dog from a shelter. But don’t mixed dogs have a much higher health, and are less keen to have hip dysplasia regardless?

also, he doesn’t want a dog that is extremely rare (he wants to have plenty of information availiable on the breed and possible to find a vet with some experience with them) or extremely pricey (500-above).

Do you think he’s asking for too much, or does any breed come to mind? Would any of the above mentioned dogs work?

Thanks!
PPT?

Define not cheap please, would he be looking between 300&500 for a well trained rottie or shepherd? or likely 500+?

if it makes any difference, the dog would be inside for the rest of the time, not in a backyard kennel.

I have never been to a pro football game. I lead a sheltered life. I am very curious how people can stand to sit in cold weather for three hours when the temperatures are in the teens like it will be tomorrow at the AFC and NFC championship games. Please tell don’t me booze keeps you warm. You guys out there must be freezing cold.

i’m thinking with all the innovative materials out there, could we all just simply wear cold weather suits, and rest our heads where ever we preferred at night?

imagine it, a whole group of people who have realized that humanity really no longer has need for traditional shelters, such as houses, tents, RV’s etc

my idea is just for people to wear these cold weather suits all the time … like this one http://www.clamcorpstore.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=342 and just lay down on the ground at night, and just wash the suit when it needs it

are there other suits that would work better than this?

i would imagine the gumby looking suits alaskan fisherman wear would work, but they are not usually too stylish

what think you all of this idea?

and suggestions on better suits are welcome … i know "aerogel" is looking very promising as a cold weather insolater
ok willie, you’re sassy but you raise some good points … are any of you familiar with this parka/cold weather suit/sleeping bag/tentish thing, that the nazi soldiers used in WW2? .. plenty of room for dead air in that, especially with todays materials, but i can’t remember what it was called ???

When you use the Chrome web browser you can also use the chrome for a cause and it counts how many tabs you use a day, the maximum is 250 and at the end of the day it asks you weather you would like to donate trees, water, books, shelter or vaccinations. You don’t have to pay anything. Check it out. It actually ends today so start using it and open lots of tabs!

This sentence is from an essay I wrote–

"The severity of the inclement weather forces the woodcutter, priest, and stranger to seek shelter; this symbolically suggests the desire to escape from disarray and uncertainty."

Thanks in advance!

My mom starves and abuse the family dog . she beats him and makes him stay in the cold ! and treats him like pure shi*t it makes me mad and sad . is there anything that can be done about this? are there any dog shelters in the burbank area ?

I have a 7by12 ft. and 7.8 high shelter I bought to put my motorcycle in. It has a removable front door. Before I would cover it with a motorcycle cover and it did have two places where air could get in but I still would cover the bike with sheets to keep moisture off. My question is should I live the front open? Or close the front up on the she lter to keep the moisture away. When the weather is bad I will close it up but I am trying to keep the moisture away. I noticed it had water drops on the ceiling when ai opened it today after we had a little snow for a couple of days and today it finally got in the mid fourties so I was going to take a short ride. Thanks for your time.

For a horse that has no barn or shelter, but does have trees to stand under, but not very thick ones to break the rain completley.

So what kind of (waterproof) turnout blanket should a horse have where it reaches 30-40F and RAINS RAINS RAINS.
should it be a heavy blanket? medium weight? and should it have a hood/neck cover? And would a horse grow its winter coat if it was turned out but had a winter blanket for warmth and dry?

Arlington Cemetery’s "Tomb of the Unknowns" has a guard in place that remains at their post for 30-60 minutes. Does the guard remain at their post during harsh thunderstorms and similar weather? Do they stay put or seek shelter?

This is not to suggest that they are not capable of remaining at their post at these times. I understand there are very high standards for this position.

(And if you’re a US citizen and you don’t know what the Tomb of the Unknowns is, shame on you. Stop playing World of Warcraft for 10 minutes and read a book, for crying out loud.)

Okay I live in a rural city. We have animal control and another rescue here in town besides the one I volunteer for. The other rescue (lets just call them Life) has been here for roughly a year. They only take in owner surrenders and strays and since they started they have: Neglected animals, have had aspca called on them twice, let there dogs get loose and breed with the other dogs on the property, used public donations for personal use, fired all of their “board of directors,” let go all of their volunteers, went bankrupt, said they were going to go out of business….
Here are a few examples of the kind of people they are:
Last year they took money for rabies shots and never gave the shots, they left small and large dogs in the mud during icy weather with no food or water, they take dog food donations from wlmart and still ask for public dog food donations (which if it were not for them it would have been donated to the city shelter or us—we are paying for food out of pocket!)
The aspca does not come out here and look at the situation. They send a sheriff out to look and call them back if it’s too bad. But the sheriff could care less. The whole city could care less. So what are we to do?
They have the support of police force and of the newspapers. The newspaper will not even run out adoptable pets because of Life. They just tell us, they have seniority.
We don’t know what we could do. Should we call the aspca and tell them? Is there something else we could do?
Or am I overreacting?
We are such a small town that people think that we are part of Life. And if they know the difference they don’t want to donate or get involved with us because Life has pretty much burned ALL their bridges. They owe everyone money and they rip everyone of. But no one will open their mouths and say anything about it!
could we take pictures and send them to the newspaper signed anon? lol/

I am a Pakistani and a Muslim. I am very confused about my country`s reputation. Some say it`s a developing country and others say that it is a nest that gives shelter to TERRORISTS. Which one you think is it? I am not as such into politics but still i wanted to know weather we are the GOOD ONES or THE BAD ONES on the eyes of the world.

where do heartworms find its warmth; protection from the weather, predators and safety for young

These people who live on the same road as me have two horses. They haven’t had them long. They have less than 1 acre of land to roam and in the rain it turns into a mud hole. These horses have no shelter to get away from the wind or that is a dry clean place to eat or drink. They are left out in this muddy mess to stand 24/7. They do get fed and watered, but I just think the living conditions are ignorant. They are fenced in what used to be part of their yard. It isn’t that big. Especially for two horses. I understand horses can tolerate the weather when able to roam over a large area, but being confined to a small fenced in area that is a muddy mess and just standing in it all day is awful.
Ohio weather has cold and sometimes wet winters. Currently it has been raining non-stop for 2 days. The area where these horses are is just a mud puddle. These poor animals are standing in mud covering their hooves and have no where to go.

We are in New Hampshire, USA. Is this adequate temporary shelter for one horse? It is 12′ x 12′.

If a person ties a dog outside during the day, how long would be safe for the dog, a german shepherd, to be kept out there in 24 degree weather and with no dog house or shelter. What if all he has to lay on is snow?
I totally agree guys. Here’s the thing, its not just one person, but more like an entire county. It’s everywhere you look there and I find it absolutely despicable.

So my recently adopted apbt pup is starting to show more signs every day of being a pit lab mix. In fact now the whole body looks like a labs, the only thing left is the pit face with a little of a longer snout. Here’s my question (s)

1: anyone else had a lab pit mix before? What type of temperament can I expect? Is it possible that he will take on mostly pit or mostly lab? or will he most definitely be a 50-50 balanced? (would it help if I posted a picture? anyone out there who can tell at sight) I’m wondering what type of behavior I can expect, I already know from the experience that he’s extremely loyal, but I mean the attitude, I know labs are what you might call perma puppies, and as they get older tire out and get lazy, and pits are very serious and at attention, which of these should I more expect? This one’s definitely goofy, but is that just because he’s a pup and he’ll grow out of it, or is it just a chance thing that he might take on more of the labs behavior. As far as protection goes and every thing else, will I more likely have the goofy but loyal lab, the serious pit, or an even balance of both? (again, if it would help at all with telling how much he has I could get a picture, its just a bit of a hassle right now)

also, I took him for a walk in the snow yesterday, and was surprised at how well he did in it, he seemed to be very adapt to the snow even with his short fur. Today we got hit with some major snow though and its a foot deep in some places, and still going up. What can my dog tolerate and what is the comfort/uncomfort weather for a winter walk? Would a lab pit mix be fine with an hour or more exercise in deep snow? And how much added warmth would a coat provide?

I had him outside before the weather got bad in a semi shelter that protected from rain but not much more, and I also brought him in because I heard that it helps their behavior to improve especially their loving of humans, as they feel more dependent to them. But I have a friend who raised labs and she says its fine to keep them in a kennel even in the winter as long as its insulated and has hay, where do I draw the line and tell whether he will be fine living outside but in a warm kennel, and not wanting him to start becoming more independent because of living outside. Any experiences here?

this is a very jumbled and complicated question, but anything you would know about these questions from research or through experience (I would prefer you say which of these you are getting your info from) is HIGHLY, HIGHLY, appreciated.
its not so much that I want him outside, I prefer having him inside, however knowing that would be helpful
"An hour is way too much to be outside with the dog to be honest."

You mean just for the cold, or because he’s just a puppy? I heard that pits and labs need a lot of exercise, would an accumulative 2 hours be good if I did it in 30 minute exercises? Cause I heard and read puppies (especially these breeds) need a lot of exercise just to behave.
so no 50-50 split, then would I be able to tell from the looks? Like would it just be whatever the dog looks more like will tell the temperament, or could it end up looking like a lab and acting like a pit, or vise versa?

the outdoor kitty has welcomed himself to our home but he hasnt had shots i made him a shelter by the front door to stay out of weather and my indoor kitty hasnt had shots in awhile. indoor kitty tries to see what is at the door at sometimes walks where he has walked.
