I am a Florida resident and i can tell you that even though Atlantic get more recent hurricanes, gulf storms are not rare but not often will be much stronger than the atlantic because the water in the gulf stays in the 90's in the middle of the summer while the atlantic side only stays in the mid 80's. I can tell you a really scarey fact, if your moving to Tampa. Tampa is one of the most Vulnerable cities in Florida to get a major hurricane with winds over 130 mph. Polk County gets saved from all those hurricanes, well a little bit but not as much. It can still cause major damage there but the every day storms we get in the summer tend to be a bit stronger(but not as much) in Polk County than Tampa Suburbs. Dont let your guard down though. We get some serious thunderstorms and hurricanes in the summer.
