How do you bring up preparing, arming, and gathering supplies for possible disasters or events with family?
Without alarming them or having them think your crazy. A hurricane last year where the South ran out of gas woke me up to this, and how it could happen with food, other things, and how fragile society is?

Ask them what makes more sense
Buying a gun, learning to use it, and find out you never need it. Or never buying one, never learning to use one, and then wishing you had
Stoking up on supplies, and never needing them, or not stocking up and wishing you would have.
Chances are, If you don’t buy Ice-melt and a snow shovel till the snow storm comes, your not going to find any.
You just answered your own question. Adapt this technique to the styles of the recipients.
…….Its always a good idea to have some supplies on hand.It cost nothing if you simply use them and replace with fresh ones.
Stock up yourself and if they don’t listen then they will have to make the best of it.
We all have seen how the government works. We must work to help ourselves.
I also suggest getting a gun and taking a survival course. Its fun and may save your life.
You should bring video of the Real World situations. Hurricane Katrina … Asian Tsunami…the effect of humans from 9/11. These reminders bring home the concept of losing what we take for granted, and make it a very real world possibility. Now to speak of us, as a family, preparing ourselves for such an emergency seems logical in today’s world. We have skills we need to learn as well as, how to acquire the things we need to survive the emergency or until help arrives; such as, food . fresh drinking water, and shelter.
Think this way: a grocery store in most cities has about three days worth of food before it runs out.
Every thing needs electricity,Power….When the electricity is gone…No gasoline, cant pump it out of the storage tanks at the gas stations,so….no fuel ,no resupplys.
So imagine if all electricty was cut off, hurricane, flood, terrorist attack, What is it gonna be like in one week with your neighbors?…How about two weeks…your out of everything…..cant cook because your electric range doesnt work, propane pilot lights wont work, People willl be running through your streets with what ever weapons they have, machete’s, rocks, sticks and every bodys got a knife…YOU ARE GOING TO NEED A GUN!, AND YOU ARE GOING TO NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SURVIVE IN PLACES WITH OUT ELECTRICTY!….By the way your water is pumped into your house……….with electricity!!!!!!!! NO WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEY are going to come to take anything they can use, including your female family members! You need a gun!
Dont count on the military and police, because not only are they in the same boat..they are way too buisy for joe home owner now!
Did you know that alot of schools for kids , now have a back up training for long term survival situations that janitorial staffs are required to take…..This is not 1960….This is a post 911 world….you need to be ready for………………whatever!…Just remember, JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE SAY YOUR PARANOID…..DOESNT MEAN THAT PEOPLE ARENT REALLY TRYING TO KILL YOU!
Hey, you can always say you’re just following government recommendations: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/disaster_prevention.shtml
Then add self-defense firearms.
You could suggest a bit of reading for them… if anyone still actually reads. If they don’t read it’s available as an audio book as well. "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen is a fictional account of what would happen if three EMP bombs were set off over the United States. It describes the events that could ensue in the year following such an incredibly possible attack against us.
Such an EMP strike would have only one noticeable effect… it would damage all electronic equipment that contains semi-conductors. That’s all it would do… but the end result is 90% of the U.S. population dead after one year. If this book doesn’t show you the light and scare the living shit out of you then there’s something seriously wrong with you.

This is a subject EVERYONE needs exposed to. Yes, I’m paranoid… but I keep asking myself if I’m paranoid enough.
Well, having ’survived’ multiple hurricanes (more than 10), several wildfires and an earthquake, I am glad that I am always able to be self sufficent for at least a week. As has been said before, just keep supplies in rotation. Back in FL, the ritual was to buy bottled water for hurricane season every spring, stack it up in the garage and complain about all the space it takes up, and then drink it over the winter only to buy fresh again in the spring. It works, and if you need it, its there. It does take some thinking about what to add to the kit, for example any dried food that requires water depletes your water supply.
Its easy to prepare when you have a common sense approach. Arming yourself includes time spend target shooting, practicing reloading etc. A good choice would be a shorter (20 inch aprox) barrel pump shotgun in a 12 or 20 ga, (with an assortment of shells) and a revolver chambered in .357/.38 special. If you really want to, a semi auto rifle is a good addition.
I don’t. I just prepare, it’s their stupidity if they don’t take it seriously and prepare.
Start with president Bush flying over New Orleans. Finish with "good job Brownie". You won’t have to do any convincing. If it frightens, you can’t change history.
