How many people actually prepare for a possible disaster?
I was just listening to Pat Robertson on You Tube. Terrorists do take advantage of political changes, 1993 (Clinton), 2001 (Bush), 2007 (New Congress?). Not a big leap to think of a terrorist attack in 2007. Kind of an anti-climax announcement.
But it did get me thinking, how many people actually prepare for a possible disaster by having a few days of food around, flash lights, medical supplies, that kind of thing. The normal Red Cross Be Prepared kind of thing.
All the "Oh my God the world is going to be destroyed by…" Nuclear war, global warming, terrorists, hurricanes, tornadoes, infestations of caterpillars, etc can leave this one alone.
I just want to know how many reasonably normal people have checked out ready.gov and have some emergency supplies around in case of a disaster.
Thanks. The ratio of real answers to silly answers tells me a lot too. Looks like if there was a major disaster any major urban center in the country things would end up a lot like they were in Louisiana. On the other hand, it kind of looks like people in rural or suburban areas might be better prepared. Kind of a common sense thing I would guess. some kind of ratio of storage space versus costs versus convince and availability, I would assume.
Thanks.

I think that it depends on where you live and how you where raised. If you live somewhere that is secluded or gets cut off from civilization in the winter, you are more likely to already have a stockpile of food, water, and other essentials on hand. For those like me that live in the city, you are less likely to have these things because of the convenience of going down to the corner. Personally, I have enough to live on till I can go shopping again. If I were to get cut off at the end of the budget cycle, I might have a problem. But I really don’t see a need to be prepared for some disaster that might happen. If it happens, I’ll deal with it then.
I keep a case of beer around for emergencies
I got my diapers and fudge…I’m ready for any attack
During hurricane season along the coast, you bet we are prepared with extra food, water , medical supplies…. etc. But, for a terrorist attack…. how would those items help if gas is filling the air around you. No… for a terrorist attack, the majority of the people do not know how to prepare for that. but we just might find out.
I have a generator, lots of gas,a propane cook stove (for camping) with lots of spare cylinders…..always have 2 cases of bottled water and can goods in the cold room.Flashlights up the wazzoo, and my home has city water and a well to boot, you can always dig a crapper in the backyard….the neighbour’s yard would be nicer…..Most people live check to check so I imagin they’d be screwed.Durind the big power outage, I bought a grundig no batteries radio ta boot.
I don’t think you would find a high percentage of the population unless they have had an experience warranting out of fear to support suppling necessary items.
It is not even close to the type of atmosphere of the 50’s when they were building underground defense quarters against the threat of an atomic bomb.
I believe there is too much complacency in our people today and other things in their daily duties to worry about and the difference in technology today keeps their mind off such things.
In my 71 years I have seen the greatest change in our society in the history of our country.
When I was a child we had a radio, a party line phone if you weren’t out in the boondocks and of course electricity and a motor vehicle if you could afford one.
