Hurricane Ike Preperation..?
I have a few questions, I live in the upper-west section of Houston, TX (Harris County for those familar with the area) & Hurricane Ike is expected to make landfall within the next few days, & I have a few questions.
1. What supplies should we buy?
2. Should we evacuate (By we, I mean my mother, sister, age 9, and two dogs) to Baton Rouge, LA, which is where all of my family lives.
3. We live in a two story home, which floor is safer?
4. What are the best non perishable foods?
5. My school is a mainly outdoors campus, with portable buildings, any chance of them blowing away? With expected 130 - 140 mph winds, I would suspect so, but I am no expert.
Thank you, most in depth answer gets a simple ten points!

Bottled water,canned foods.Cloths.
Board up the windows on the side that is expected.
If you leave shut off gas line.Electricity.
Be wise in this decision.
Darling, there’s not enough room or time to write it all so go here:

God Bless you, your family, your friends and neighbors.
1. You should buy Flashlights, batteries, A lighter maybe, a Propain stove ( in case the lights go out so you can cook things like soupsits found in the camping section of like walmart.)
2.I think you should evacuate (im not because last time we evacuated we ended up in traffic fo 15 hours)
3.The bottom floor is probably safer, In the bathroom.i think i’ve heard that somewhere.
4. The best foods to buy are canned foods like soups that you could easily warm up if you have the propaine stove. Umm you could also get maybe cereal. crackers.Oh an lots of water.
5. Im not to sure aboutthis question since i dont go to a school like that. Sorry.
i say evacuate before it strikes. when you evacuate put an X with masking tape on the windows of your house; this strengthens them. Any valuabes you cant take lock them inside a windowless room which is the best thing you could do. If you are not choosing to evacuate stay in a windowless room and place matresses ontop of yourself. If staying, stay downstairs as it is closer to the foundations. If you live near a large amount of water (lake, ocean, very big river) stay upstairs as you may drown. Please tell me if this was any help
If you live in a Hurricane Zone..
Your Emergency Kit should have the following:
* First aid kit and essential medications.
* Canned food and can opener.
* At least three gallons of water per person.
* Protective clothing, rainwear, and bedding or sleeping bags.
* Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.
* Special items for infants, elderly, or disabled family members.
* Written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas and water if authorities advise you to do so. (Remember, you’ll need a professional to turn them back on. or a handyman)
2) Depends on the path of the Hurricane, you should be ok in Harris County. there is nothing wrong with Evacuating, if you have concerns then do it. Safty first.
3) interrior rooms on the first floor are best. stay away from windows incase of flying projectiles hit your house.
4) Canned foods. things that dont require a heat source to eat are best. (should always have a few in pantry anyway)
5) the buildings probably wont ‘blow away’ but i wouldnt be suprized if they sustained some damage depending on what’s around them. more then likely they will be ok
1. anything that is important : pictures, flashlights, batteries, radio, water bottles, food (canned), manual can opener, etc. also fill your car with gas now b4 it’s too late
2. Yes evacuate unless you want to go through winds of possibly 135mph or more with even higher gusts. Try to stay as far away from this path http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/211330.shtml?5day#contents
3. 2nd, flooding will occur at massive numbers. better if you have a 3rd floor on top you incase the wind blows your roof. I’d recommend going to a shelter or simply evacuating somewhere safe. best bet would be for you to go West
4. Granola bars? not sure
5. pretty high chance if it does head your way and strengthen, which it probably will. The pressure of the hurricane could currently take it to a major hurricane. it hasn’t happened yet b/c of its large size.
Never been thru this since I don’t live on the coast, but here’s what I think:
1. an ax incase you get trapped
2. yes, I’d get the heck outta dodge.
3. I think storm surge is most dangerous, so probably top floor….but, w/ those high expected winds, then I’m not sure….
4. healthy ones, like granola bars…not junk
5.yeah, I wouldn’t think those bldg’s would make it.
Well its strenthening to a 4 so id leave with all ur stuff thats important…OH! and your family (JUST JOKEING LOL!!!) (no serissly take your familly to)
