I want to build a easy shelter for my horses.. Any idea?
I want to build something easy I can build for shelter for my horses.
I am not good at building but since living on a farm you know how to patch things up etc… Even if it doesnt look nice. I have a lot of scrap wood and want to build maybe 2 shelters for my horses out in the pasture.. Any good ideas or picture step by steps?? Remember I really know nothing about building but want to try.. Its just about winter and gotta get my horses shelter… It doesnt have to be fancy. My horses dont care as long as they can get out of the weather.
Thank you!! God bless!!

Build a shed out of wooden poles for the corners, used wood for horizontal lads to nail up siding, If you have some cedar trees that you can cut down, they work perfect for poles. You can even use tarps to cover the outside.
You only need three sides and a roof, leave open side facing southwest to block north wind and catch the sun in the afternoon.
Sorry, if you need instructions on building a proper shelter for your horses you need to sell out and move to the city. Gee, it’s Dec 3. I suspect it’s already cold. I thought farmers were either self reliant or they were rich.
Your horses should have a pole barn…three sided construction for them to get out of the weather/wind. It should be positioned to block the wind..go out and stand on multiple times and days to find the general direction of the wind that travels through your property. It will travel the same direction most of the time (stand away from any buildings) or just watch how your horses stand to know the direction.

Check out these to get an idea…to build an average three sided shelter for my horses it would have cost around $500 for building supplies. Of course there are many variables..size, wood, your location. Remember to get a building permit or you might have some trouble. Make sure you have your shelter large enough for all your horses, and adding a closed off room on the end of it will be a big help for you to store grain in (ensure you have a door on it or they will get in).
If all your horses need is something over their heads and something to block the wind, then I have an idea for you. Use Electrical conduit (EMT) and canopy fittings. These are the same metal structures that you see vendors set up for flea markets and swap meets. These aren’t the flimsy picnic tents, they are very strong and durable. Plus they can be set up in minutes. Google "canopy parts" or visit ysbw.com for the fittings and buy conduit locally.
I use 1" EMT because it is much stronger than the very common 3/4" EMT conduit. However because of your horses weight, you might want to use 1 1/2" or even 2" conduit and fittings.
After you erect the structure, you can fasten poly tarps to the top and sides. I’ve used these and they will stand up to wind and rain (be sure to pull the top tight and slope it a little to let water run off). Also, be sure to buy UV resistant tarps.
