If you were to build a house in a place that had bad winters, which direction should the front steps face? ?
North, south, east, or west; to shelter them somewhat from the weather, with walls on both sides?

I would face them south.
Good luck with your building!
face them south to let the sun work on them during the day…
south
South is the best choice. It minimizes the ice and snow accumulation.
We lived in a house in Denver that faced North. The ice and snow was always a problem. Many times our neighbors across the street didn’t have to shovel their snow. The sun melted it and dried the driveway.
Opposite the direction of the prevailing winds, which in most of North America is from the west or North. So you could face your front door east or south to avoid most of the wind.
