Living on South Beach, in Miami Beach, and commuting back and forth to work in North Miami Beach could be a hassle. The names may lead you to believe that they are part of the same stretch, but they are not. South Beach is on Miami Beach, a barrier island that runs parallel to Miami.

North Miami Beach is on the mainland (and, the name notwithstanding, has no beach). So, you’d be traveling to work both far north and far west (and, of course, returning far south and far east). If your hours at the restaurant are odd, then it won’t matter so much, although it would still be, conservatively, about a 15-mile trip each way.

Here’s a compromise: Live on Miami Beach somewhere north of, say, 79th Street, and then you’ll just have to travel to work mostly westerly only, but, during your time off, you could drop down to South Beach from home in 20 minutes or so. And, rents likely will be cheaper around 79th Street to 95th Street (I choose those streets because they are close to causeways that can zip you across Biscayne Boulevard from Miami Beach to Miami) than on South Beach, which is Government Cut/Commerce Street to the canal, a few block north of Lincoln Road.
