I heard a few days ago they were calling for 10 named storms.
Accuweather, a nationwide weather service, recently reported it expects 2010 to be an “extreme season” with as many as 18 named storms, a 100% increase over 2009.
The El Nino is weakening that likely kept the tropical activity low in 2009 so it is very likely that 2010 will be more active just because 2009 was a "quiet" year. There currently is nothing to suggest that it will be a particularly extreme season and there are a few things that do suggest that it will be mid to late August before activity picks up to any degree. As for predictions, nearly all are saying more than last year and some are calling for extreme numbers. Who is correct, only time will tell. Should be interesting.
As for the gulf coast residents, they always need to be ready to take action every hurricane season. Have a plan on what to do and when they will do it. Even if there is one, it could always hit in there somewhere.
