My neighbor has 2 dogs out in this really cold weather. They have houses but don’t sleep in there? What can I do
They r out all night & freeze! My neighbors used to bring them in but now they don’t! The water they have is frozen & they only get fed every other day! I feel so sorry 4 them but what can I do? We really don’t get along w/ them!! I’m afraid 2 call the shelter 2 have them investageted. I want 2 do it annynoisly but my hubby says no!! I don’t want them 2 freeze out there!! They r mother & daughter 6 yrs and 2 yrs!! Should I call the shelter & have them look into this or turn my back & hope they die peacefully which will break my heart? What should I do?
They look in good shape 4 pitt bulls. They r on oppsite sides of the yard. The dog houses r made of wood on 3 sides w/ the front open. They both have a rug on the ground next 2 the houses. My neighbors say that they r not pets only guard dogs 4 keep them safe. I have only seen them fed once (left overs) but my hubby says that the father feeds them everyday I just don’t c it! 4 the last week it has been between
9′ f & 29′ f ! Plus we have been having windchill factors of -10. When I walk my pup @ 3 am the black & white (mother dog) 1 is lying on the side of her house, the brown laying next 2 the house on a rug that is just a little bigger than her! I noticed this last week & asked hubby who said 2 mind my own business! I can’t any more. Their feed & water bowls r metal mixing bowls or metal pots! They r also on very short leashes & @ 1st I thought they couldn’t get into their houses but I sw them walking around 2 day so that can’t b the case!
I have only seen my neighbors bring in the dogs when they broke their chains that r tied around a tree. I don’t even think they have collars (I’ve never seen them) I think they r tied up w/ the chains that r tied 2 the trees!!
I e-mailed my local animal shelter & told them. I only gave my e-mail address & asked them NOT to tell who reported them!! I gave the address as well as directions & told them what I saw!! I hope 2 hear something soon!!

If the dogs are not being properly fed and are not given access to fresh unfrozen water then you should call the animal shelter. However, i have a long haired golden retriever that lives outside for the most part even in winter months. I live in the northeast and the temps occasionally get into the single digits. She has an insulated doghouse on our deck and always has fresh water and food. I do not tie her up and she has a large fenced in back yard to play in. She is also given alot of attention, exercised daily, and sees the vet on a regular basis. However i have recieved several comments from neighbors who have the "no dogs outside in cold" belief. Also had someone call the SPCA, they came out and checked out her living conditions and health and told me that she was fine to stay outside and that she is in good health and is a very happy dog. If the dog is being neglected than Yes, call the shelter. If the dog has adequate food/water/shelter, is in good health, and is a breed capable of withstanding cold weather there is no reason it cannot stay outside.
Do not call your local humane society. If the dog’s are not sleeping in their dog houses it’s because they want to be outside. Trust me, my neighbors called the humane society on me and they came out and laughed because my dog’s house was insolated and he’s a snow dog who loves outside and chose to stay outside! When they came it was 0 out and the dog was laying outside instead of in his warm dog house. If you’re really worried, please talk to your neighbor, but chances are it’s not because they dont care about the dogs, its because the dogs are outside dogs and do love being outside.
Call now
pitts have short coats and can’t be out in this weather…. poor things
Call your local Humane Society or Animal Control.
don’t tell your husband and do it anonymously, actually don’t tell anyone, just do it…think about how the poor dogs feel, they can’t stand up for themselves.
For Heaven’s sake, call and have it investigated.
Report them! That is animal cruelty. Ignore your husband, he clearly doesn’t care about the dogs’ welfare. Living conditions like that will eventually lead to a slow and painful death. Dehydration and hypothermia are terrible ways to die.
I don’t understand how some people can be so cruel! What’s the point of having a pet if you treat them like garbage! My dog sleeps in the bed with my husband and I. What I would do is call the ASPCA if you have one in your area. If not, call animal control and talk with them. Good luck!
Thats cruel and he could go to jail for it, Inhumane . Get them dogs somewhere warm please. Animal lover Michigan.GIVE ME THE ADDRESS AND STATE AND I WILL CALL, TO REPORT THESE IGNORANT PEOPLE.
can u please tell me what kind of dogs?
some dogs can stay out side just look at the paws 4 frost bite.
The shelter will kill them.Call a no-kill shelter & ask them to come & talk with the people. You can find one on-line.Why would they not go in the houses? Are they snow dogs?
Call the Humane Society to have them investigated. You can do this anonymously. These animals are not being taken care of properly and could freeze to death. It is your duty to report this abuse.
YES!!! call the shelter, having the dogs out in a freezing weather is just cruel and horrible, you can call and ask if you can remain anonymous.
report it for sure. if u watch and dont do anything about it you’re just as bad (i know ur probably not since u care but u know what i mean)
I have a 1yr pure breed jack russel terrier. I love this pooch more than anything! I would strongly suggest you call the shelter! Those dogs won’t die peacefully! They will freeze to death! They will fall asleep into each other for warmth and will never wake up. They care for us when we face rough moments. They save our lives, our abandoned babies, and respond to our needs. We should do the same.
Call them up, or call 911 for that matter. I bet you’re not the only who sees this. And if you are, you could simply deny it. Make a phone call wen not home, from a payphone or your office phone. But DO call. It’s cruelty. Besides, you’ll live for the rest of your life knowing that you killed them. You could’ve saved them. And you still can.
If you live in Canada, where I do, I urge to call them. It’s frigging -30C here. That’s roughly what? 10F?
Save them … it’s not fair otherwise.
do they really freeze? what sort of dogs are they? the cold might not bother them. if it did, they would probably go into their houses.
you say that they only get fed every second day. do they look skinny and underfed? if so, than call animal control. but keep in mind that if they are taken off them, they will probably be killed by the pound anyway (but this is probably better than starving to death)
I would call The Humane Society. They will at least come and investigate, although I have to warn you…if the dog houses are "up to code" meaning they are big enough and adequately insulated, the Humane Society can’t do anything because all the owners have to do is PROVIDE shelter. The water and food thing may be another story. Also, with the weather as severe as it’s been, they may bend the regulations a little and issue a fine.
I feel the same way about situations like this. This is gonna break your heart until you do what you can about it…at least TRY. Tell your hubby that he doesn’t do your thinking for you. Tell him you are going to report it, and that you will take full responsibility for any repercussions. We have to speak up for the ones who can’t.
God bless you!
Some dogs are meant to be outside. But if you are worried, which is natural for a decent human, you should get a friend or coworker to call the shelter, that way, you aren’t directly involved. It may be alright to leave them outside (I had a dog growing up that just wouldn’t come in and was alright outside…although we made him a house with carpet and well,,,…not the point)…the worst thing you can do is ignore your worried feelings because something terrible could happen and you would have to live with it. Find an animal lover and talk about it with them and they will probably volunteer to call for you.
take care
You can call the humane society anonymously and you should!! I even brought our so called "barn cats" into the heated back porch. We have chickens and 2 cows and have been feeding them three times a day and putting hot water out 3 times a day. Trust me–they won’t die peacefully freezing and without adequate food and water! Call now! Right now I have 3 animals (2 dogs and 1 kitty) that I found outside my door during the winter–covered in ice and starved. I wish someone would’ve turned in the people who did it to them!
My stupid cousin’s wife did the same thing…..it is amazing what a phone call can do for a person’s peace of mind……..
make the call…you will feel better …and you don’t want to see these little guys die…..
I know I felt better .. ; )
Report them. Period. If there’s a no-kill shelter have them sent there… if not, telling a shelter to call you if they can’t find them a home and offering them a donation to keep the dogs alive seems to work from my experience. But yes, don’t just let the dogs die when you KNOW you can do something about it… that’s as cruel as the people leaving their dogs out. Then yell at your husband for being a heartless ****.
Or, if the law in your area is very lax about animal cruelty (which many places are, sadly) you can always just steal the dogs in the middle of the night (just make sure you get them far away by morning)… I’ve had to do it when living in the south where animal cruelty is generally acceptable.
Whatever you do, do something!
And no, no matter what anyone says, no domesticated dog in a civilized society should stay outside. Even wild dogs find adequate shelter for themselves. If a family isn’t willing to treat their dog with respect and consideration (and is willing to leave him/her outside with no food and water), then they have no business getting a dog in the first place. They’re sentient beings - not possessions.
It is not the shelter you call.
Call the Humane Society in your area.
Your name or address will never be given out….and how can you sleep at night knowing that this is happening and you have done nothing yet. Please save these dogs lives, and hopefully they will be removed from the home and given homes where they are loved and well taken care of, which they deserve. Do this first thing in the morning. this is animal cruelty and you knowing what is happening and not doing anything is almost as bad.
There is very little you can do if the dog has access to food, water, and shelter. In this case, the water is frozen, so something *can* be done.
Please call and tell a local shelter. Many have investigators they send out.
I had to do this once…and they were out there first thing the next morning. I gave them my name, but asked them to keep me anonymous. They did.
never turn away when you can help an abused, neglected animal!
I would call the Human Society and have it investigated. I have two dogs…a German Shepherd and a Yellow Lab. We live in Minnesota and even when it’s 40 below my dogs want to be outside. I only let them out to do their business then I make them come back in. They hate it. There’s no way I could leave them out there though. It’s fricken cold!! They have doghouses outside but they dont’ go in them either. They would rather lay in the snow. Maybe your neighbors dogs are that way too. But I believe that they need to be smarter and not let them be out there so long. I’ve never let my dogs stay outside overnight. They only go out for 15 minutes (if that) at a time when it’s cold. Definately do something about it…Don’t let those dogs suffer.
Call the humane shelter right away. I don’t know where you are, but I know if it’s as cold as is it is here that I wouldn’t make my worst enemy stand outside in a cage all day with no shelter. Very Cruel!!! If you absolutely can’t do it then tell someone your close to, besides your husband, who can make the call for you anonymously.
