Parents: Are you prepared for a major storm?
I live in Florida and we are supposed to be getting ready for a bad hurricane season. We usually get everything we need, but are on a tight budget this year. I’m sure we will manage to get whatever we need, little by little, but it got me to thinking……What about the people who just don’t have the money? Have you ever seen the supply list?
Are all of you ready if a hurricane or any other major storm hits your area?

Honestly, yes.
I keep a seperate food and water supply (dry beans, canned foods, etc.)
We have an emergency kit for the house and car (Blankets, first aid, lighting, batteries, knives, etc.)
We have arrangements made to leave - with our dogs- should a hurricane/other disaster hit (my husband’s work actually requires they supply that info.)
We keep our gas tanks in the vehicles above the halfway mark and keep extra in the garage.
That’s all to protect us though. If the house and contents go, oh well. More important the living things make it through the storm.
I have seen the supply list, they send them out every year. They are pretty lengthy, and some of the things they suggest you get to secure your home are pricey.
I do feel for the people that don’t have the money. However, most major cities in such areas have things set up for the low-income. Here, there are buses set up to pick up and evacuate residents that have no transportation. But honestly, there are so many that don’t know what to do, don’t care what they should do, or simply can’t…if a major storm hits, there will be lots of loss.
I live in Tornado Alley. Basements and storm cellars are our only options.
I live in Ohio. When we were kids we stocked up for the winter. I still do this. Everyone laughs at me. I actually keep it stocked all year. I buy little things here and there with the groceries and we use what we have so it is rotated right. People that do not have the money will have to rely on the goodness of strangers and wait for help.
We live in Illinois and there really aren’t any major storms that *can* happen here. But if a tornado were to come we’d probably be screwed… unless we knew it was coming and could run up the hill to the neighbor’s house. We are close and I know were she keeps her key. She has a basement, we don’t… I wouldn’t risk running up a hill in a bad storm though… food, water wise, then we’d be fine. The tornado is on top of our house… uh…
Good luck to you guys down there in Flordia… hope it isn’t too bad.
We had a tornado here last week. My storm cellar is full of water and snakes, so I had to get in the tub with a mattress on top of us. Luckily it didn’t hit us head on, just our barn. The storms we have here, it wouldn’t help us to have a supply back up, because it would likely be blown away.
I volunteer for the Red Cross and I’ve seen it all from Katrina to Rita to Ike….it’s definitely something I’m glad we don’t experience. We live too far away from the Gulf to have any significant damage, but we have been hit by tropical storms and tropical depressions (which aren’t that bad, unless you live near the coast).
People who don’t have the money generally don’t live close enough to the water to experience much damage. The most damage comes from the water, not the winds. Chances are if you can afford a beach house, you can afford supplies and what not.
Though, there are some who are affected who don’t have enough money for supplies and those people usually end up in shelters.
The most we have here are tornadoes…but as a family we enjoy those (kind of). Our kids are very interested in weather. We figure if our home gets hit it was God willing, and we have a basement to get us through it.
I live near the gulf coast, and I am ready for a storm. We have a weather radio, canned food and water for 3 days and other emergency supplies. My husband’s work actually relocates him (and my son and I go too) during a major storm, so we evacuate, but I keep all the necessary supplies on hand just in case. I always worry about the people who don’t have supplies, but our county opens plenty of shelters for people in need.
It doesn’t take much money to stock a decent emergency preparedness kit.
I grew up in Fla., and seemingly every year they talked about a "bad hurricane season" yet I don’t remember a single one that was all THAT bad.
I live in Texas on the coast and we are getting ready a little at a time. I already have first aid supplies, diapers for my son and I have a pretty good selection of canned goods and every payday I buy an extra couple cases of water. I’ve also stocked up on batteries and candles. We are not ready yet but we are getting there because like you said, money is tight. Lets just pray that we get ready in time! Take care.
hurricanes will be exponentially bad considering they will be full of toxic oil sludge and spreading it everywhere
don’t think there’s any way to prepare for that…
