People who live in Florida: Do you think that the media exaggerates when a hurricane comes?
I live in Orlando and they are obsessing about this tropical storm Fay and it’s hardly even as bad as the thunderstorms we get. I know it’s worse if you live by the ocean but I feel they go overboard with it sometimes. I was born and raised here and a lot of the time they do exaggerate things. It seems like the media gets excited about hurricanes or tropical storms.

In a way. If you were a meteorologist you might too. How often does "scattered storms with a high of 80" get boring? This is a major Meteorological event. It gives them something to talk about, it gets them excited.
Beside, they also don’t want people to get complacent. Hurricanes / tropical storms are difficult to predict. It might hit land and turn into a light shower within an hour, or it may gain strength over the everglades or off one of the coasts and come kick our butt.
Storms shouldn’t be taken lightly - even though us experienced Floridians ride them out like pros. Fay turned into nothing, but don’t forget she left a wake of bodies in her path before she got here. Better to be safe than sorry.
Would you rather them not exaggerate and then another storm like Katrina comes and destroys everything you have and have ever known? It’s their job.

Yes I agree with you but if you were living here a few years ago when we got 3 hurricanes back to back, you may remember that the first two hurricanes were under exaggerated and many people here in central florida were not prepared and lived without power for a month (more more) in addition to losing money, having lots of repairs and so on. I think they would rather go on and on about a "possibility" than have that happen again.

Just from the look of it i kind of knew it wasn’t going to be that bad it wasn’t put together well. I stay in west orange county and we haven’t got really no rain.

To be honest yes, I was just thinking this yesterday. I live in central Florida and had our local news station on all day yesterday and wound up just feeling sick and panicked and SO anxious because of the over-reporting, panic reaction, and hearing things over and over again. In the end I had to shut everything off and resolve what would be would be. I am pregnant and that level of worry can’t be good!! I know it gives them something to talk about but I believe it can cause an unfortunate side effect: public panic and chain reaction which just makes matters worse.
