yes, i know it’s so debris does not hit your window and shatter it. but can wind from a hurricane blow your windows in? or cause them to break? i live in pennsylvania & hurricane irene is on it’s way up here. should be here around late afternoon saturday or during the day sunday. they’re ordering mandatory evacuation in all the shores, and they said new york is definitely in a lot of danger. they’re closing down the highways & subways saturday afternoon. if a hurricane is suppose to be this bad, should i board my own windows?

What does the american government do about the destroyed houses due to the tornadoes. Do the government pay for new houses? Or are the americans supposed to pay a tax to the government for natural disasters? Sorry, I’m not american so I cannot really understand how americans get by while they have their houses destroyed. How long does it take to start living normally again?

Personal experiences are welcome =)

Seriously, it should be common knowledge amongst the moderately well-informed populous as to why there’s an arbitrary fluctuation in gas prices — ESPECIALLY that (to me) they appear to have "magically" dropped when America needs it most.

Well — I got news for you gas co.s…we ALWAYS need it, okay?

And spare me the platitudes of a "supply & demand" lesson in any answers to this question, please (or hurricanes, or the recession — none of that’s changed enough to justify this drop).

I want to find out if there’s someone out there who ACTUALLY knows why "the powers that be" are able to knock three dollars off the price right now, and not back in the summer…or always, for that matter!
PS: This guy, "Headtater" (4 answers down) is the prototype for what I’m talking about.

Of course I’m happy gas prices are lower! I’m trying to ascertain the cause behind the drop so we can KEEP it that way…brainiac.

Some people…all opinion, no solution.

***Questions at bottom of Additional Information***

I was watching the news about the HORRORS happening across the world from me and I keep hearing people say REALLY stupid things like “It’s no surprise that the US Supplies are being stolen… Just look at what Bush did after Hurricane Katrina.” And it made me think about the bias in the news coverage when it came to Katrina.

I’m MIDDLE GROUND in everything so I don’t have the wool over my eyes when it comes from EITHER side of the nut-job spectrum so when I watched the difference in reporting, I was SHOCKED at how both sides were manipulating the disaster to further their own aims.

The BIGGEST thing I noticed was how CNN and the Leftie nut-job side referred to EVERYONE as a “Victim” while Fox News and the Rightie nut-job side and the non-biased referred to them as “Survivors” and it REALLY hit home.
If you label someone as a “Victim” then they take on a pathetic, beaten down, “I can’t help myself” air while a “Survivor” is someone that has SURVIVED THE WORST & is ready to help their fellow survivors & rebuild!

A “Victim” is weak & needs others to support them…
A “Survivor” is STRONG & willing to accept help but is working just as hard as the helpers!

I remember watching the interviews on the various news stations & it was shocking how they picked through the people to find the specific “Type” of person to interview to specifically further their own political aims.

I remember an interview with an Asian family & when the reporter kept calling them “Victims” they actually stopped her & said “We are not victims. We survived & we will rebuild.” & 6 months later I saw a 60 min’s story on how they flipped off the world & didn’t retreat.
The whole community stayed & pooled their money & resources & strengths & they had almost finished rebuilding the houses & repairing the streets while a few miles away, the houses were still mold covered & the people THERE were doing nothing but b*tching about George Bush & how they had yet to get their FIMA Debit Cards.

Everyone I asked about these details went STRAIGHT DOWN PARTY LINES! The Republicans said “They are Survivors” & the Democrats said “They are just victims, unable to help themselves.” While us Middle-Grounds could stand back & see the distinctions & the shades of grey.

***QUESTIONS***
Does anyone else understand the manipulation tactics of their own political party?

Why is it that only about 1% of the population of the US is even ABLE to see the blatant propaganda & manipulation tactics?

What is your opinion on this?
p.s. I see this type of manipulation EACH AND EVERY TIME I turn on the news, but with H.K. it was so obvious that it is the easiest thing to use as an example.

"Normal" news days can be ignored or it is so small that you need to research what REALLY happened to realize the way you have been manipulated, but with H.K. it was so obvious that I could almost see the "Thought Bubbles" over the heads of the reporters saying "Believe US and not THEM!"

I’m just curious it’s raining really hard with high winds in Sacramento right now. I was just thinking about the past hurricanes in "Florida". Including the tsuami earthquake in Japan.I haven’t heard any recent bad hurricanes in the "sunshine state" this year, but remember in the past "katrina" , "Wilma", "Ivan" etc. Can the hurricane also hit "Amway center" & "American Airlines Arena"?
BQ: Why is mother nature so cruel?

Me and my friend snuck into this house through a window cause everything else was boarded down with wood. There seemed to be a fire, and the downstairs looks like a tornado blew over it.
I did a little research on the house after I got home. This is how it looks like now http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3515/3190484014_cca0e42432.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisanne001/sets/72157603701994222/&usg=__bela_cmABm4U4wrW9wtmD5i66mc=&h=375&w=500&sz=245&hl=en&start=0&sig2=H-aOtIg4UdAXyEZRFVK8ZA&zoom=1&tbnid=mo6MHMKHR8eS0M:&tbnh=139&tbnw=195&ei=qBl4TfifMYfDgQe7psjPBQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhouse%2Bon%2BOcean%2BParkway%2Bat%2BAvenue%2BU%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1I7DLUS_en%26biw%3D979%26bih%3D602%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=390&oei=qBl4TfifMYfDgQe7psjPBQ&page=1&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:11,s:0&tx=90&ty=121
The reason why we wanna fix and buy it is because it use to look like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisanne001/2503367760/in/set-72157603701994222/
Is it even possible for us to buy it? If so how much would repairs cost? And my friend is almost 18, I’m 16.
When my friend turns 18 she could buy it.

Is skittishness even a word? On February 28, 2009, my husband and I adopted a chocolate lab mix from the humane society. She was 6 months old then (8 months now). They found her on the side of the road when she was 6 weeks old. She was very sickly when we got her. She had been up for adoption for several months and no one wanted her. She was living in a "foster home" with about 20 other dogs, 10 cats, and one eccentric hoarder (female). That woman was the only person my dog (Maddie) had ever been around prior to us.

The first time we met her, she walked right up to my husband and started wagging her tail and playing with him. She loved him right off the bat. But she’s very shy around other people.

We walk her several times a day and take her to the park at least 2x a week (if the weather is decent). We let her meet as many dogs as she possibly can & she’s very friendly with them. She’s VERY sweet with us and warms up pretty quickly to people who own dogs. But she’s very shy around everyone else. She rears away with her tail between her legs or sits and won’t budge.

Should we take her on errands with us whether she likes it or not? Last night, we took her to an ice cream/show cone stand that was really busy and all these little kids wanted to pet her, but she was absolutely frightened.
I noticed that sometimes because she’s shy, people back away from her thinking she’s going to lash out at them. I honestly don’t blame them. But I know she’s a sweet dog who just happens to be shy. She’s great around our friends and family. She just has a phobia of strangers.
The humane society here is run by volunteers. They do not have enough room on the premises for all the dogs that are brought in, so they let some of their volunteers raise them in their homes. This woman was single and she was a nurse, so she told us herself that she’d be gone for 3 days, home for 4. Her house was DISGUSTING. All those animals, their deification all over the floor and furniture, rotten sandwiches and other food, dishes, and garbage completely covering her counter-tops and kitchen table. It was disgusting. I’m not lying or exaggerating when I say she was a hoarder. We told the humane society and they let it go on.

I didn’t ask you guys to judge me for getting my dog there. My lord. Get over yourselves.
Like I said, she’s completely fine with my husband and I….. that wasn’t my question.

Volcanoes, Earthquakes & any kind of flood, if you’re caught up in natural disasters like these you could be in trouble!

But what of the Tropical Cyclonic storm?

I believe there’s a way we CAN BEAT NATURE!

How?

With architecture - with what I’ve euphemistically called TELESCOPIC BUILDINGS!
See this clip:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E06cNv55jTs - Have you finished laughing yet?
The main building in this clip - called Marineville http://stingray.sfdaydreams.com/
(scroll to bottom) along with other models in the classic kids hit TV show are able to move up and down beneath the ground.

With properly watertight hatches couldn’t this be the answer to hurricanes and typhoons?

Isn’t the real challenge though, to ’scale’ the whole thing up & create designs we can economically mass produce? After all, we’ve been using lifts IN buildings for a very long time now - can’t we take it a step further & somehow actually make buildings INTO LIFTS to save lives during storms?
One interesting answer so far:-

1. The mass of the buildings could be solved with scale. I.E. R+D should be started with say, a small ground floor apartment.

2. As to the speed of the lifts - surely that would be dependent on gearing and similar type factors - and does it have to be fast? Normally there’s some sort of warning of a storm, which gives ‘preparation’ time that people already use now, when they nail down boards over their windows etc., thus enabling building descent time.
3. The weight issue, it seemed to me that alot of the elevating platforms featured in the various Gerry Anderson puppet shows did have a basis in fact, just needing the right kind of R+D associated with problems of scale.

3. As to anchoring a buiding securely - I have seen programmes on the TV where whole buildings have been relocated - the R+D starts there!

4. As to the water table issue - if the ‘basement’ walls and floor were made of concrete, surely this would give the necessary integrity!

Volcanoes, Earthquakes & any kind of flood, if you’re caught up in natural disasters like these you’re in dire straits!

But what of the Tropical Cyclonic storm?

Isn’t that the real challenge? To ’scale’ the whole thing up & create a design we can mass produce? After all, we’ve been using lifts in buildings for a very long time now - can’t we take it a step further & somehow actually make buildings INTO LIFTS to save precious lives?
This question is principally aimed at those poor sods who suffered that horrendous tornado in Enterprise, Alabama; where I believe they lost the roof to their school - just imagine a telescopic school!!

What about people ? Is it possible you engineers and architects out there could design buildings that could adapt to bad weather such as this?

Surely the bottom-line is - if your homes and schools and office and maybe whole factories etc., aren’t on the SURFACE when one of these cyclonic events happens, then we can protect our buildings as apposed having to keep rebuilding them everytime a storm hits?
deeohhgee I suppose being a fully paid up member of the Moral Coward Society i.e. someone who doesn’t display an IM or Email address goes hand in hand with not reading the question properly - I think your find I covered the FLOODING aspect in the first two lines of my question, but just for you -" any kind of flood, if you’re caught up in natural disasters like these you’re in dire straits!" and as far as it being a ‘bug’ in my idea, don’t we have submarines then with hermetically sealed doors and hatches ?

Making the underground area in which a building would lower into water tight, I would have thought would be a relatively simple thing to achieve - where I feel the real challenge would be - as I previously said in the question, would be to make any such venture affordable, especially on a mass produced scale !

We have lived in Michigan all of our lives, and are looking to make an out of state move. We have 3 kids - 2, 7 & 14, and just can’t take the 6 month long, nothing to do winters anymore! I just finished my associates degree and am looking to obtain my BS after the move. Price range for housing would be about 200K. We don’t want to live in a big city, but not too far from one, and preferably not too far from the water (but not too close either as we don’t want to be dodging hurricanes on a regular basis). My husband is favoring FL (Orlando suburbs) right now and me, TX (Houston area). We took a trip to Savannah GA recently and loved the city (wouldn’t want to live in Savannah tho maybe close by) We have been looking on city-data.com and have gotten lots of good info that way. Are there any other good forums? Please help us find our perfect home, we are very anxious, and overwhelmed in our search.

I had a dream where me and my family were on like a really high floor at a hotel, it was somewhere by the beach, & I was looking out of the window & all of a sudden it started raining really hard & as i watched the other hotel rooms across from mine, i see windows shattering & balconies flying off with people on them! & after the storm died down i suddenly appeared right in front of my house. like my real house, not the hotel. everything on my block was changed, new things were built, & one of my neighbors houses looked like it had been vacant for years. & the next day my family planned to go back to the tropical place, so we went to this weird place with a bunch of boat taxis & we got in and the boat driver started driving us through this little river-like thing and each side had plants on them. it was really odd but to us it seemed so normal and there were like horses along the river-side and they seemed so out of place! & soon after that i woke up.

what does this mean?!?

I get a message, saying this:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

I lost my installation CD somehow ever since moving around a lot from in 2005 since Hurricane Katrina. I got this computer AFTER Katrina, but I’ve been moving from place to place to try to finish up my college degree & get on with my career. Is there a possible way I can fix this without the installation CD?

1. A steel building has never burned down before
2. The twin towers were built to with stand more force from wind daily then the force of the plane crashing into the towers
3. Mayor Rudy Giuliani had hurricane proof glass put all the way around his buildings floor and his own air & water supply for the same floor put in shortly before 9/11(why would he do that if he didnt know what was going to happen?)
4. Right before 9/11he twin towers that were paid for with tax dollars was leased to a man named Larry Sliverstein who changed the security in the towers 1 month before they fell…and this same man made millions of dollars in insurance money when the towers fell
5. According to all the papers the terrorists could not fly at all… they were failing flight school but i am supposed to believe they were able to fly a 757 into the pentagon making a 250 degree turn flying inches above the ground hitting the only part of the pentagon that had been strengthened for a terrorist attack

about how many budgies do you think will fit in my cage. It is and indoor aviary (but we keep it outdoors and put under shelter when it is bad weather & at night time), it is 120 cm high and 66 cm wide on two side and about 70 cm wide on the other two sides, how many budgies do you think will fit in it?

The season’s just started with Alberto & I know a lot of those states have struggled all year with rebuilding. Is the South better prepared?

after hurricane ike the the power surged did something.
and deleted the files to operate internet explorer.
because windows vista isn’t use friendly. it’s dumb.

so supposibly i’m supposed to download a file from
the windows vista site, that has the files in order
for the internet to work.

the internet is fine, the at&t company was here earlier.

so what site or what program do i download?
i’ve spent awhile looking, and i don’t know. :[
alanm7 your wrong.
doesn’t matter what kind of internet your using. it matters upon the hard drive.
all the files in the harddrive are erased.
and actually realisticly mozilla firefox slows down your pc.
pretty badly. it’s fast but it slows
down the other shit and takes forever
to do other things.

so might as well not go buy a new pc
for 2 months of cool internet.

Hey everyone! The weather is really getting crazy out there. If you have extra socks & scarves anything and your not using it please pass it on to someone who needs it at a shelter. If you don’t know where a shelter is you can just drive around and hand them out. Trust me you will be happy you did so will they.

one of the main reasons margo will win against manny is that the tijuana tornado will be 100% focused on this fight and is being motivated by redemption..when the plaster was discovered in margos lockerroom before the mosley fight margos focus on the fight went out the door..the only thing on margos mind that night in the ring against mosley is "im gonna go to jail"..im gonna win a small fortune on the night of november 13 because pacman is gonna be heavily favored to win in the odds and im gonna bet in the casino for margo to win..here are some pics of pacman & margos recent photo shoot http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&id=30561

Requirements:
Minimal snow and cold in winter. Some is fine, but my wife hates winter.
Minimal chance of hurricane and tornado damage.
Mostly temperate climate:
- no water supply problems
- good amounts of sunshine, low to moderate amounts of clouds and rain.
These conditions should obtain for 30-50 years.

Now that everybody’s stopped laughing, how close can I come, from the Carolinas up to???
Haven’t stopped laughing through the first 3 answers. [And Norma, not to worry, we're keeping the house by the kids.]
One for six so far. Thank you, AMP, for a good answer.

According to this link, and another which I cannot find we’re under a tropical storm/hurricane watch. The link told us to prepare and stuff, but is all that really needed? It’s west orange new jersey, so it’s close to new york and the jersey shore.

If preparation is needed, please gives guidlines/tips on how to prepare. We only have a day left!
It also scares me that the weather channel said that this could easily turn into a warning, It has my whole enighborhood a little shaky.
