Should I still go away this weekend, even in Hurricane Irene?

Thoughts please??

I live just outside of NYC. A group of friends and I had decided several weeks back to all get together this weekend at a rental home in CT (Windham County). The plan was to drive the 3 hours there this evening (Friday) after work and come home Sunday. I know Irene’s path and intensity keeps changing but I can’t decide if I should go or not, and I want to hear others’ opinions…

Some factors:
- I haven’t seen these friends in a long time, and will likely not be able to see them again in a long time
- The shortest route home takes 3 hours and would be on I-95, which is rather close to the projected center of the storm
- I could take an alternate route which brings me farther inland to a Tropical Storm Watch Zone (rather than a Hurricane Zone), but this would take 5 hours and still likely be bad weather
- I could drive up tonight (3 hours) and leave tomorrow afternoon and be home before the worst of the storm (but then is all the driving worth it?)
- My friends are all still going and seeing tomorrow if it changes and whether its safe to stay or if they should leave early….

Is not helping people a bad?

I often see people walking down highways in bad weather and stuff. And i would love to help them, but most of the time i have my kids with me and i have to think of them. there are so many psychos out there. so it’s not a bad thing to not help right?

And if a homeless or some other person came to ask your help or needs where to stay for the night would you let him in or give him shelter?
I personally wouldn’t judge people for not trusting me in those time we live in. what is your oppinion?

How far is too far to drive to take shelter from a tornado? When is it too late to seek better shelter?

I live in a tornado area and I’m moving into a third-floor apartment. There is no interior hallway, no 24-hour community building.

My parents are a (typically) 15 minute drive away, and have a nice big brick house with a basement. In bad weather or bad traffic, this could go up to 30 min. We get tornado watches OFTEN, but will usually get additional cautionary information if the storm is going to be especially bad or is expected to spawn more tornadoes.

Once it’s a tornado warning, when is it too late to drive to shelter? How far is too far? There is also a flimsy-looking but large walmart and another 24-hour store that are only 5-10 minutes away by car.

My dogs have shelter outside but what if?

My dogs have shelter outside but what if a tornado comes?
is it better for me to lock them up in the shed with food and water too keep them out of the storm or would it be better to let them stay in their usual environment to where they could run away from the bad weather or tornado if they needed too? Someone suggested me leaving them as they as in their usual shelter Just incase they needed to run away they would be able to have some type of chance instead of being shut in somewhere and not being able to run away if they needed?
If this sounds bad to people I am sorry but it’s not like it sounds. My dogs are well cared for, they get fed more then twice a day ( too much actually ) they go to the vet and get their shots and etc I was just thinking because i’ve never been in this situation and we are suposed to have alot of tornadoes heading our way. Are next door neighbor has a storm shelter we go too but the guy is allergic to dogs and they have 3 kids but i don’t think all the kids are allergic just one but we can’t take the dogs with us and there isnt anywhere else to go

how come dogs dont know when to give up barking?

I work graveyard, and it just seems like my neighbors dog goes on for hours barking, because my neighbour is too big of a dumbass to realize that, if he’s not willing to share shelter on the inside then he shouldn’t own one to leave outside in bad weather when he’s gone at work I love animals, but why can’t freakin dogs conclude that "I’m wasting my energy and all this barking is getting me nowhere, and I might as well wait for my master to return because he couldn’t hear me anyway.

Bad weather and dogs? Please help…..?

hey everyone! i just wanted to post this question asking for help. have any of you experienced bad weather? i know you all may have heard of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan that happened last night. very, very tragic. i live in the Hawaiian Islands, and we have a tsunami watch too. some of the beaches are just flooded for now. no one knows how much worse it will get, since the first waves aren’t always the worst.
but i need to know what to do for my dogs in case i have to evacuate. some towns and cities already did on my island. plus there was an earthquake on one of the other islands. that wasn’t too bad cause it’s kinda a daily thing over there. i have their medical records, i.d. collars and dog first aid kit. i have a 15 pound bag of unopened dog food that i keep in case of emergency. we have water, blankets and a few toys and bones for them. is there anything else i may need? in case i have to take them to the shelter, i would like to know. any help is appreciated. i’ve never been through this with animals. i just want to be prepared if worst comes to worst, you know?

Why are the birds in my area, making sort of a warning chirp noise?

The birds in my town have been making the strangest noise I ever heard birds make. If birds had their own language, I’m sure this would be their way of warning other birds about something. Are the birds warning about impending bad weather, or even a natural disaster? Because I’ve heard animals can sense when bad weather is coming and take shelter and warn others of their kind about it. Just wondering.

This question is principally aimed at those poor sods who suffered that horrendous tornado in Enterprise, Alabama; where I believe they lost the roof to their school - just imagine a telescopic school!!

What about people ? Is it possible you engineers and architects out there could design buildings that could adapt to bad weather such as this?

Surely the bottom-line is - if your homes and schools and office and maybe whole factories etc., aren’t on the SURFACE when one of these cyclonic events happens, then we can protect our buildings as apposed having to keep rebuilding them everytime a storm hits?

Making the underground area in which a building would lower into water tight, I would have thought would be a relatively simple thing to achieve - where I feel the real challenge would be - as I previously said in the question, would be to make any such venture affordable, especially on a mass produced scale !

Climate change used to be a topic I did not think about a few years ago. However, when a series of devastating hurricanes hit our state one after the other in the last few years, I started to think that maybe climate change is a big issue after all. Florida is usually the entry point of hurricanes entering the United States so we are used to foul weather. Usually, the hurricanes are tolerable as long as residents take proper precautions. However, in 2005, when Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma among others, wrecked havoc in Florida and the surrounding states, one cannot help but wonder if the weather had gone crazy. Hurricane season sometimes starts early and ends late. There are too many storms arriving in the country. Then there are days when the weather is too hot when it should be cooler and too cold when it should be getting warmer. I see crops wasting because the rains came too late, and land and beaches getting smaller because the water levels are rising. Some of the changes are subtle like the rising water level. Sometimes it can be sudden like experiencing too many hurricanes that are category 4 and 5.
I recently watched former Vice President Al Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” (2006) and his presentation caused alarm. Gore showed scientific findings of rising sea levels, disrupted food chains, diminished harvests, droughts and storms (2006). The gardens and nature I admire may soon be gone if the rampant use of the earth’s resources without regard for the future goes unchecked. Because I am young and at the prime of my life, I am afraid by the time I grow older the weather strange characteristics will occur more frequently. I might experience stronger than category 5 hurricanes or perhaps snowstorms in normally-sub tropical Florida.
Unpredictable weather can wreck havoc on the economy. Droughts and flash floods can destroy crops meant for eating. Even if I plan to be in the service industry, bad weather can prevent me and my colleagues from reporting to work. Bad weather halts work and consequently affects productivity. Paraphrased from the World Bank, the current climate change that is mostly causes by human activity is expected to:
-increase climate changes from one end to another of the spectrum and affect agriculture;
-decrease the quantity and quality of potable water for human and agricultural use
-increase the incidence of water-borne diseases like malaria and dengue fever, especially in -
-the tropics and subtropics where many poor countries have overtaxed health services
-harm forests, seas and other ecological systems and diminish their biodiversity, which can
harm the livelihood of people depending on these systems (2008).
Closer to home, unpredictable weather can affect the productivity of organizations like if bad weather keeps their workers away from work. Weather can also ruin buildings and structures. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita may have caused extensive damaged to the South but their devastation increased oil prices and almost crippled telecommunications across the country when they destroyed cables and oil rigs. This shows that damage to one area of the country can cause a ripple effect to other areas. An oil spill in Texas can affect Florida and other states. It can destroy tourism and fishing industries because of the contaminated waters. Air pollution in cities can affect the suburbs as well.
This is why it pays to be involved in addressing the problem of climate change. One person can make a difference, especially when he or she influences as well. One way is to reduce my carbon footprint, which is the amount of energy I consume from the food I eat, transportation mode I use, climate controlled environment I live in (air conditioning or heating) and other activities I may do (Weidmann and Minx, 2008). I can walk instead of using the car. I can encourage my friends to carpool instead of driving our individual cars. I can change from a gas guzzling vehicle to a more fuel efficient one. In the future, I can choose a more energy efficient house design as well.
However, apart from watching how much energy I use daily, I can also recycle. I can also encourage my peers to join me in recycling their belongings. We can also try to reduce our consumption of unnecessary items like buying too many clothes, shoes and other items that we do not use regularly. These items would only be wasted if they were worn only once and discarded. This could even save us money, a welcome practice during this current economic crisis.
Encouraging is difficult if others would not support me. I could join local chapters of environmental groups who share the same beliefs to gain more support and also to help me sustain a “green” lifestyle. We could start by educating young people in my community to start recycling and being aware of their carbon footprint. Al Gore stated that he renewed his goal of educating people worldwide about climate

I am a former wedding photographer of 12 years. July 25, 08
I was attending a wedding rehearsal that I was hired to photograph as well as the wedding. I always arrive early to take photos of the church of every wedding I do. I was not on the clock yet, but I wanted to arrive extra early on this rehearsal because the weather forecast was calling for bad weather and maybe tornadoes, so I wanted to make sure I got the photos of the outside before it started to rain.

As I started to take my photos on this gloomy day, All of a sudden, the sky became really dark, and the clouds started to form right above the church. And I thought that I had better hurry because it was about to rain. Then the clouds slightly parted to allow this very illuminating light from the sky to show. Then the clouds started circling, counter clock-wise around this light. So I started snapping photos like crazy because I thought this was the start of a tornado. How great would it be to get a photo like this for the bride and groom over their church. I was excited because a tornado is something I never took pictures of……

Then, just as quickly as it started, was as quickly the clouds dissipated and it became just gloomy again. I thought how strange that was and just went on because the first person arrived for the rehearsal.

Later, I was looking back at all my photos to decide which to keep or delete to use for this wedding. And this is what I captured……

The first photo is this circle with an image on the ground of a little girl with blond cropped hair. Zoom in to see better.

The second photo is the circle that turned into this light being on the ground. The colors are spectacular.

I did not see these at the time of the photos. I was more focused on the sky. When I first saw the photos I had taken, I was going to delete these because I was in such shock and a little startled. Then I realized that these photos were something special.

Later, I showed my husband and he pointed out the figure of a lady which the clouds formed around the light in the sky also.

I have been a photographer for a long time and I have experience with lighting. These images are not sun spots, glare, reflection. I have never seen this before in my life. I have looked on all the ghost and spirit sites, and I find nothing like this..

I am not sure to even tell my experience or even show my photos. I have for the most part, shared these photos to close friends and family members only. My light being does not scare me or those I have shown. It gives good feelings.

I feel it may be time to share these photos with other people. Maybe these photos will comfort someone who has seen or had experiences with light beings, so they know that they are real. There is something after death. Energy does not end.

I know some people are going to try and say I fixed these photos and there are going to be people who will not believe this and I’m ok with that now. I assure, these are true photos that are not tampered with or fixed. I still have the original chip negative it was taken with.

When I first showed family and friends, some would ask me if I fixed these, and those comments would upset me. Now, I do not care what anyone thinks. I know these are true photos.

Then I am asked what I think it is, an angel, Jesus, Virgin Mary, a spirit.
My answer is, I don’t know. I am no one special, but was chosen, for what ever reason to take the photos, that’s it.

Where can I get cheap functional shutters for my home?

I live in Louisiana, heart of hurricane weather and the season has just begun, so I want to purchase some hurricane shutters, so i will not have to go the agony of getting wood boards, then having someone put them up etc. I have double paned windows, which are expensive to replace, I called home depot, but the guy told me he talk to me about "their home program, which sounds like opening a credit account(which I can not do) and paying on it monthly. I just want shutters that can be closed during bad weather myself, and that does not cost into the thousands. I have only six small 4 small windows and 2 larger ones on the home. Thanks guys.
