This has been bugging me for quite a while now. Why is it that every photograph of a hurricane is taken by satellite, rather than from ground view? And how come people never see the actual funnel cloud? Is it too far away? Every time I google image search for a hurricane, I get either satellite photos of a cyclone or pictures of rain and wind blowing things away. No funnel cloud.
Does the actual funnel cloud reach land and cause damage like tornadoes do?

This is a sample of my Hurricane Wilma storm chase video. The footage was taken during the peak of the storm on the Southwest Florida coast in Belle Meade, near Marco Island. Peak winds occur after the lull, associated with the passage of the storm’s eye, and are near 100mph with gusts to 120mph.
Hurricane Ivan was a classic, long-lived Cape Verde hurricane that reached Category 5 strength three times during its lifespan. Ivan caused tremendous damage as it crossed Grenada, the Cayman Islands and made landfall near the Alabama/Florida border. Maximum sustained winds at landfall in the US are estimated at 120mph with gusts to 140mph, Category Three intensity. At landfall, the storm’s minimum central pressure was 946mb (27.94in). This video also includes some behind-the-scenes footage from the National Hurricane Center including clips of my good friends and hurricane forecasters, Lixion Avila, Jack Beven, Max Mayfield (the center’s director at that time)… as well as another good friend, Monroe County ex-Civil Defense Director Billy Wagner. Also in the background is Florida Governor, Charlie Crist.
Filmed with a Standard 8 movie camera. Shows flying debris, roof sheeting coming off, boats washed ashore, buildings demolished in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. Restored and sound effects added. Contact me for more details.

Myanmar News:YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — A cyclone that struck Myanmar’s western coast late last week killed at least 27 people, left more than a dozen missing, displaced tens of thousands of others and damaged thousands of buildings, state television reported Monday. The cyclone arrived on Friday evening with winds of up to 110 miles per hour, lashing several coastal areas of Rakhine state that are home to poor families living mostly in bamboo huts. The storm later moved into central Myanmar. The report on Monday was the first announcement from the government on casualties and damage from the Category 4 storm. The military government tightly controls information, and in 2008 it also delayed reporting on a devastating cyclone that killed 130000 people. The junta was widely criticized for what were called inadequate preparations and a slow response to that disaster. This time, the government credited its preparation and warning system with saving lives, saying the death toll was low because officials had helped 53000 villagers evacuate before the storm. In one coastal town, Kyaukpyu, three camps set up by the Myanmar Red Cross and the Social Welfare Ministry were housing more than 5000 people, said Andrew Kirkwood, the resident representative of the aid group Save the Children. A resident of Kyaukpyu, Chit Chit, who was contacted by phone, said that the roofs of many homes had been blown off and that many areas remained flooded. She said communications were out over the weekend …
