Part B - 08/29/2005 B-Roll aftermath footage shot around the New Orleans, LA International Airport that shows the huge difference in the damage depending on the location around the metro area. On the south side of the airport along Airline Highway, there is no flooding, only damage from the high winds. While the south side of the airport was high and dry, the north side of the airport at Williams Blvd. and Veterans Blvd. was flooded with several feet of water and the water was still rising. Footage includes cars floating in the high water and people walking in the high water while large police truck drive through the flooded roadways.

B-Roll footage includes video of a hurricane flag blowing in the wind, boats anchored with high winds and waves hitting them, high winds hitting condos and hotels on the waterfront and storm surge from around the island including the southern most point. Additional footage of palm trees in high winds and storm surge along Atlantic Blvd. and White Street along with footage shot in an underwater camera housing as the surf hits the camera. Hurricane Footage; Strong Winds, Floods, Big Waves, Water and Wind Damage. A tropical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a large low-pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rain. Tropical cyclones strengthen when water evaporated from the ocean is released as the saturated air rises, resulting in condensation of water vapor contained in the moist air. They are fueled by a different heat mechanism than other cyclonic windstorms such as nor’easters, European windstorms, and polar lows. The characteristic that separates tropical cyclones from other cyclonic systems is that any height in the atmosphere, the center of a tropical cyclone will be warmer than its surrounds; a phenomenon called “warm core” storm systems. The term “tropical” refers to both the geographic origin of these systems, which form almost exclusively in tropical regions of the globe, and their formation in maritime tropical air masses. The term “cyclone” refers to such storms’ cyclonic nature, with counterclockwise rotation in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise rotation in the Southern Hemisphere. The opposite direction of spin is a result of the Coriolis force. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by names such as hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone. While tropical cyclones can produce extremely powerful winds and torrential rain, they are also able to produce high

Please understand, I am in no way an alarmist nor raise my voice to steer anyone in the incorrect direction, but I see something that has recently occurred that has me really concern in the short and long term sense.
The most recent oil rig disaster in the Gulf off the American coast seems to be looked upon in a blasé fashion. What I mean is doesn’t you the citizens of the world know what the true short and long term ramifications of what is occurring, what is going to happen because of the incompetence of one of the worlds biggest greed mongers.
People who have gone out to help with the clean up, the fishermen, shrimpers, and Joe American found themselves becoming extremely sick, that they were told that they needed to wear hazmat suits while doing the clean up of bacteria ridden oil that has been trapped in the earth for millions of years.
Don’t you realize that within 9 to 14 months this oil spill, I mean the continuous oil flood will have circumnavigated the earth in some form or the other carrying God only knows what new diseases that have been trapped for millions of years, propagating, multiplying and morphing in the stew pot of protein the oceans has to offer as one giant Petri dish; bacteria that very well could have been the very device that could have wiped out the dinosaurs. Bacteria that could be easily be spread much quicker inland by just one hurricane and across the globe, and you have BP who seems not to know their [jack] a-ss from a hole in the ground, is in solo control of this mess?????
You may think, we pump oil out of the ground all over the earth and nothing has happened yet; yes this is true but the difference is that the oil is in a closed system, and is kept under wraps all through its processes of breaking it down [cracking] into the products we all use. People get sick when exposed to crude oil really sick and cases of cancer in the short term have been documented from the date of contact.
We b itch and complain and point our fingers at the government for its lack of action while BP hides behind policies that have been put in place by those who protect big business rather it be Democrat or Republican, when we all throughout this planet need to stand up and I mean stand up now and protest in masses about this whole mess. Brother and Sisters put aside your indifferences and make your voice heard. To quote an old line in a movie, we damn mad and we ain’t going to take it anymore. Pick up the phone; go on line, walk, drive or bike to the local political parties or officials and voice you anger. Boycott BP; don’t buy gasoline or any other product from them, send them a clear and undisputable that we as the human race will not supply your coffers with the fodder your greedy corporation feeds upon until this mess is 100% taken care of , then watch how fast it gets fixed.
Heck, take a few of those fat cat BP executives and shoot them into the well head that should quickly plug it up.
Voice your positive or negative concerns, all answers will be appreciated; don’t delay act now or parish in the future.
Hey apeman605 eat chit and die. Oops, I spelled that wrong, but you get the message or are that ignorant?

Okay, so there are freaky weird snowstorms, they say they are historic. Then, a HUGE cyclone is hitting Australia, with them leaving because all shelters are packed up, then there was a flood in there too, and a threat of the California ‘Super Storm’/ And just now i n yahoo news, they have pics of Lightning and a volcano and stuff. No they said in 2012 when the world is supposedly supposed to end, they said freaky weather would pop up! What do you think of this?

I live in Florida. To tell you more I live in Brandon Florida. In hilsbrough county. I live in a house. It doesnt realy flood much but the pool some times over flows. What do you think we should do to get ready. We got water and can food. Do we have to do anything to the windows? I know we are inland but just wantt o be safe. i want to get ready asap, i go to school wendsday and my wife cant help me so i have to do it alone. I am 23. almost 24. Should I get gas in a can what? Also I have a deck and it lays on the ground it has dirt on it. It floods some time and that backs up to a slideing door next to our house. Should I put sand bags next to low windows and the door to the slideingdoor and the soor into the deck? Should I lower the water level in the pool or leave it? It is in the ground pool and isnt covered. Who has to evacuwat in hilsbrough and where do I find out online? is there a state of emerncy in FL?
I am in school not her. The only reason i ask this info is becuase we cant prepair to much becuase I am doing it alone becuase she cant do much as i said. My wife cant. I know it is only ts and maybe a H1 but strong t-storms with it and winds and maybe torando. I just wnat to be safe thats all. yes I just moved her two years ago but I know its not to much to worry about but I want us safe. Didnt know if sand bags should do it or should just wait to see what is going to happen. I didnt know what would happen in brandon anyways?

Volcanoes, Earthquakes & any kind of flood, if you’re caught up in natural disasters like these you could be in trouble!

But what of the Tropical Cyclonic storm?

I believe there’s a way we CAN BEAT NATURE!

How?

With architecture - with what I’ve euphemistically called TELESCOPIC BUILDINGS!
See this clip:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E06cNv55jTs - Have you finished laughing yet?
The main building in this clip - called Marineville http://stingray.sfdaydreams.com/
(scroll to bottom) along with other models in the classic kids hit TV show are able to move up and down beneath the ground.

With properly watertight hatches couldn’t this be the answer to hurricanes and typhoons?

Isn’t the real challenge though, to ’scale’ the whole thing up & create designs we can economically mass produce? After all, we’ve been using lifts IN buildings for a very long time now - can’t we take it a step further & somehow actually make buildings INTO LIFTS to save lives during storms?
One interesting answer so far:-

1. The mass of the buildings could be solved with scale. I.E. R+D should be started with say, a small ground floor apartment.

2. As to the speed of the lifts - surely that would be dependent on gearing and similar type factors - and does it have to be fast? Normally there’s some sort of warning of a storm, which gives ‘preparation’ time that people already use now, when they nail down boards over their windows etc., thus enabling building descent time.
3. The weight issue, it seemed to me that alot of the elevating platforms featured in the various Gerry Anderson puppet shows did have a basis in fact, just needing the right kind of R+D associated with problems of scale.

3. As to anchoring a buiding securely - I have seen programmes on the TV where whole buildings have been relocated - the R+D starts there!

4. As to the water table issue - if the ‘basement’ walls and floor were made of concrete, surely this would give the necessary integrity!

Isn’t that the real challenge? To ’scale’ the whole thing up & create a design we can mass produce? After all, we’ve been using lifts in buildings for a very long time now - can’t we take it a step further & somehow actually make buildings INTO LIFTS to save precious lives?
This question is principally aimed at those poor sods who suffered that horrendous tornado in Enterprise, Alabama; where I believe they lost the roof to their school - just imagine a telescopic school!!

What about people ? Is it possible you engineers and architects out there could design buildings that could adapt to bad weather such as this?

Surely the bottom-line is - if your homes and schools and office and maybe whole factories etc., aren’t on the SURFACE when one of these cyclonic events happens, then we can protect our buildings as apposed having to keep rebuilding them everytime a storm hits?
deeohhgee I suppose being a fully paid up member of the Moral Coward Society i.e. someone who doesn’t display an IM or Email address goes hand in hand with not reading the question properly - I think your find I covered the FLOODING aspect in the first two lines of my question, but just for you -" any kind of flood, if you’re caught up in natural disasters like these you’re in dire straits!" and as far as it being a ‘bug’ in my idea, don’t we have submarines then with hermetically sealed doors and hatches ?

Making the underground area in which a building would lower into water tight, I would have thought would be a relatively simple thing to achieve - where I feel the real challenge would be - as I previously said in the question, would be to make any such venture affordable, especially on a mass produced scale !

No one can predict a natural disaster or world crisis. When a hurricane or flood or a pandemic strikes a country, who is most likely to respond first? Which economic system is the best solution to handling a crisis of epic proportion?

What advantages might a socialist system have in responding to the needs of people struck by an emergency situation like the earthquake that occurred in Haiti in January, 2010?

When disasters hit an area, the cost of everything seems to go up immediately: food, water, housing, gas and so forth. Explain why this phenomenon may be a good thing, using the laws of supply and demand to explain your answer.

Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, there became a strong concern in this country
about our ability to cope with natural disasters. Due to the expensive cost of
acquiring detailed data about the hazard before, during and after the event, many
agencies are putting systems forth to allow citizens affected by the events to
contribute details about their surroundings. This may be in the form of data sent
over a mobile phone, or Internet connection to a PC. Please weigh in your thoughts
about using this system as a method of coping with natural disasters by taking this
brief survey.
* 1. Have you ever experienced a natural disaster?
Yes
No
2.
Which of the following hazards have you experienced?
Flood
Hurricane
Earthquake
Fire
Tornado
None
3.
About at what intensity did the disaster occur?
Very low
low
moderate
high
very high
* 4.
Did you have access to the internet following the event
Yes
No
5.
As the event passed, did you feel that adequate updates about the hazard were
provided to affected citizens?
Yes
No
* 6.
Following the event, did you feel coherent enough that you would be able to
communicate in detail about your surroundings?
Yes
No
* 7.
Have you ever contributed Geospatial Information about a hazard or extreme event
online? (Through Google Earth, USGS website, Weather channel, etc..)
Yes
