How can I get prepared? Living in Louisiana during hurricane season is really scary. My family want to move just for the months of hurricane season but school is during the season and I don’t wanna mess up my schooling !
How can I prepare for this , ONCE AGAIN?

Footage of Gustav outside my mom’s house in Plaquemine.

The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply convoys.

Now they’re training for the same mission - with a twist - at home.
Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command [created by Rumsfeld, Cheney, Tenet et al. after 9/11], as an on-call federal response force for natural or manmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks.

It is not the first time an active-duty unit has been tapped to help at home. In August 2005, for example, when Hurricane Katrina unleashed hell in Mississippi and Louisiana, several active-duty units were pulled from various posts and mobilized to those areas

Louisiana used to have these drive up Daiquiri stands where you could pull your car into a McDonalds type drive through window and order a Daiquiri, Hurricane, Beer….etc and then just drive away as you sip your drink. I can attest to the fact that they existed as recently as 2006 but I have not visited Louisiana since then.

I learned a lot of fascinating things about New Orleans during my recent vacation there. One of them was not to bother taking too much post Hurricane footage.

I live in Louisiana, heart of hurricane weather and the season has just begun, so I want to purchase some hurricane shutters, so i will not have to go the agony of getting wood boards, then having someone put them up etc. I have double paned windows, which are expensive to replace, I called home depot, but the guy told me he talk to me about "their home program, which sounds like opening a credit account(which I can not do) and paying on it monthly. I just want shutters that can be closed during bad weather myself, and that does not cost into the thousands. I have only six small 4 small windows and 2 larger ones on the home. Thanks guys.

America is at war - For a reason. Even though you might not understand why.
He Vetoed the bill to pull the troops out of Iraq - Read the full bill, that was only a small part of it. The Bill was actually to FUND the troops.
Gas prices are high - Yes and it sucks big time, but again, not Bushs fault, blame supply, demand and the gas companies..
The whole Hurricane Katrina Incident - The PROCESS was slow and the leaders in Louisiana are as much at fault. Bush CANNOT order troops into a state. If he had you would be saying he was "Invading" them.
He uses scare tactics such as "terror attacks and threats" to gain control of the American people - Yeah, look at his ratings. How much control does he have in YOUR life…
Our civil liberties have lessened - How?

Even with all the shit that went on during Clintons presidency, I was still able to coherantly focus the blame where it lay…
If all he cared about was "A Paycheck" and he has the connections he has, dont you think he could be making a whole lot of money NOT being President? He certainly wouldnt have has much vitriol thrown at him daily. I have a friend who is a Texas state trooper and while he was assigned to guard Bushs ranch, he said it was common for Bush or his wife to bring them a plate of BBQ while he was on duty (This was before Cindy Sheehan lost her mind and camped there)

• Only 2 percent of the federal government’s hurricane-related funding went toward education recovery.

• The costs of hurricane destruction in K-12 and higher education were estimated at .2 billion, but only .2 billion in federal funding had been committed to restoring physical structures and property. Some rebuilding funds have come from the local and state levels and insurance, but several projects are unfinished.

• Displaced students re-enrolled in schools in 49 states, but a lack of adequate federal funding meant that schools with the greatest number of displaced students had insufficient classrooms, staff and supplies to support them. The report found that as many as 15,000 K-12 public school students and 35,000 college students in Louisiana and Mississippi missed school last year due to lingering problems associated with Katrina.

• Nearly one out of every six students in Louisiana’s public colleges and universities dropped out for the 2005-06 school year. In the 2006-07 school year, more than 26,000 students from Louisiana public colleges and almost 9,000 Mississippi college students remained out of school.

I live in Louisiana and am worried about the upcoming hurricane season. Starts Thursday, I think. I’m originally from Mississippi so I’m rather new to this dramatic hurricane stuff. Katrina about blew us off the map! If any of you live in the coastal regions, I would love to hear your opinion.

Even after all the devastation last year people are still not ready for this hurricane season (that started today).
Are you ready?

The news said that over 80% of people have done nothing to strengthen their home.
Over 2/3 of the people have NO hurricane plan (they do not stock any supplies or have any evacuation plan if the need arises)!

If I lived in Florida or Louisiana I would be scared of hurricanes (the hurricane season is getting worse every year because of Global Warming). How can they not have plans to get out?!?

it’ll be that time again in 3 months. I live in louisiana and it seems like we just barely went through hurricane gustav and hurricane season is already coming again. I always get kinda nervous about us having another 2005. not just talking about new olreans either, that year was crazy as hell when it came to hurricanes. do you think this’ll just be another season to come and go or something worse? also have they made the predictions on how many storms we’ll have? :)

Are you worried about IKE? What have you done to get ready? Aren’t you tired of being told to "hunker down"? We’re putting up the shutters tomorrow and still have most everything else (batteries, water, food) from the "Fay" scare. What have you done?
Crow where’s Lake County? I’m in the Treasure Coast.
Southern - my mother-in-law (who I love) is in Louisiana (Washington parish) I know how you feel!

hurricane season is approaching and every year my fellow gulf coast residents prepare for the big one (remember rita?) they run to the store and buy all the supplies and water and other non perishables weeks before it even begins. normally i dont prepare too much but my question is does anybody here have a hurricane survival plan? any special tips they would like to offer such as evacuation routes, supply storage,. etc. ive lived in houston and louisiana my whole life and survived a lot of storms but with the economy being so unstable and with gas and food being so expensive, any tips we can share with one another would be nice.

I think people should be more responsible for there own safety. There are people that think the Government should support them, take care of and rescue them. We have a moral responsibility to look after the old and disable, not they able body, lazy leeches on society.
I am from Louisiana and am remembering Katrina and the elderly and diabled that could have been saved if the were not wasting energy and time on those who by choice didn’t want to leave.

I basically live on the bayous of Louisiana and unfortunately we are in the line of fire of Tropical Storm Gustav. I notice that they update at different times but I can’t seem to catch on to what these times are. Is it every 2 hours? I know they repeat the info throughout the hour but I am wondering about the new long / lat, mb, speed…things like that. New updates.

Just three weeks until Hurricane Season begins. Do you think this season will be really bad or not bad at all?

I live in Louisiana, and we haven’t got hit since Katrina. So it makes me wonder if we’ll get hit again this year. I wouldn’t be suprised with all this crazy weather lately.

If the federal government provides 0 million in disaster relief to the people of Louisiana after a hurricane, then 80% of that money is spent in Louisiana. If the money is repent over and over at a rate of 80% in Louisiana, then what is the total economic impact of the 0 million on the state?

Was it Florida, Louisiana, or North Carolina?

Ride Hamilton shows the FIRST intense video excerpt from his in-progress Hurricane Katrina Documentary. The only tapestry of stories filmed LIVE as it was and STILL IS happening. It covers in tragic, emotional, and honest detail - everyday of the storm from DAY ONE to TODAY. THIS PODCAST: Ride stands on Lake Pontchartrain on the eve of Katrina. The next day, Ride grabs his cameras and starts filming. Quickly he discovers everything save a few neighborhoods is destroyed or flooded. He meets …

I have heard of people getting this free money in Louisiana in which individuals send off an application including a .00 fee for processing. It is something to do with stuff that you have bought for your home. Someone please help, any information is greatly needed and is better than none.

Hurricane Ike’s winds and massive waves destroyed oil platforms, tossed storage tanks and punctured pipelines. The environmental damage only now is becoming apparent: At least a half million gallons of crude oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico and the marshes, bayous and bays of Louisiana and Texas, according to an analysis of federal data by The Associated Press.

I just moved to Louisiana a few months ago and there is a tropical storm which is expected to move into the gulf and possibly become a major hurricane. I have been watching the weather and it as weakened and is a few days from getting into the gulf. should I leave just to be safe or wait. the thing is I don’t have that much money. and i don’t want to spend it for nothing. and if i should leave when…sorry i am so new at this I’ve never been through a tropical storm or hurricane! thanks

Does anyone know how to go about getting a disaster relief job? I live in Louisiana and am from Texas and since these are the places around here that have been hit recently I would like to help clean up and restore things. It seems impossible to find any leads though.
