Initially a weak pencil-like tornado near the Bell-Williamson County line, the funnel rapidly intensified into a 3/4 mile wide multi-vortex storm at around 3:45 PM CDT. Its first damage occurred three minutes later at 3:48 PM CDT in the northwestern portion of Jarrell striking Double Creek Estates. It later moved into a wooded area before dissipating after damaging numerous trees. Grass and soil in fields near Jarrell were ripped out of the ground to a depth of 18 in (46 cm). When the tornado crossed county roads outside Jarrell, it tore a 500-foot (152 m) length of asphalt from the roads. About 40 structures were completely destroyed by the tornado and dozens of vehicles were lifted in the air and tossed, some thrown more than half a mile. Many researchers, after reviewing aerial damage photographs of Double Creek Estates, considered the Jarrell storm to be the most violent tornado, in terms of damage intensity, that they had ever seen. Most of the homes in the tornadoes path were well-constructed and bolted to their foundations, the tornado left only the slab foundations. Several entire families were killed in the tornado, including all five members of the Igo family and all four members of the Moehring family. There were 27 human fatalities in the Double Creek subdivision. In addition, about 300 cattle were killed by the storm. About 10 minutes prior to the main event, eye-witnesses spotted additional tornadoes north and west of Jarrell. Numerous vehicles sought …

This is a sample of my Hurricane Wilma storm chase video. The footage was taken during the peak of the storm on the Southwest Florida coast in Belle Meade, near Marco Island. Peak winds occur after the lull, associated with the passage of the storm’s eye, and are near 100mph with gusts to 120mph.
Hurricane Ivan was a classic, long-lived Cape Verde hurricane that reached Category 5 strength three times during its lifespan. Ivan caused tremendous damage as it crossed Grenada, the Cayman Islands and made landfall near the Alabama/Florida border. Maximum sustained winds at landfall in the US are estimated at 120mph with gusts to 140mph, Category Three intensity. At landfall, the storm’s minimum central pressure was 946mb (27.94in). This video also includes some behind-the-scenes footage from the National Hurricane Center including clips of my good friends and hurricane forecasters, Lixion Avila, Jack Beven, Max Mayfield (the center’s director at that time)… as well as another good friend, Monroe County ex-Civil Defense Director Billy Wagner. Also in the background is Florida Governor, Charlie Crist.
This is footage taken at the National Hurricane Center (then located in Coral Gables, Florida) on the morning of July 23, 1985 as Tropical Storm Bob was impacting South Florida. Neil Frank, director of the Hurricane Center at the time, can be heard (and seen) talking on the phone to local government officials. Storm chaser Jim Leonard is also in the background.

This is raw video from David Reimer shot just south of downtown Oklahoma City on the now infamous May 10, 2010. Sirens were activated just after 4:45 PM CDT when the supercell that would go on to produce several strong tornadoes, including the Moore EF4, first became tornado warned just southwest of the city. This was a High Risk day from the Storm Prediction Center and the local media had been hyping up this event for the past week, still there were some people that did not take the warning seriously, as you can see in the video. This was about ten minutes before we moved northeast to get out of the way of the softball sized hail inbound and to get in the path of the cell out east of the metro. Be sure to check out Connor’s excellent tornado video from the red river that was taken about 90 minutes later. This video is not for rebroadcast, but a clean version of the video is available for media licensing.
Hurricane Charley strengthened rapidly just before striking the southwestern coast of Florida, over Charlotte Harbor, as a Category Four hurricane. Although extremely small in size, Charley produced sustained winds of 150mph and gusts to near 175mph, causing catastrophic wind damage in the communities of Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda, FL. The Charlotte County Medical Center recorded an unofficial gust of 150kts (173mph) and the Charlotte County Airport recorded 139kts (160mph). Charley’s minimum central pressure at landfall was 942mb (27.82in) and I recorded 950mb (28.05in) at my location near Fawcett Memorial Hospital. Veteran storm chaser Andy Dressler accompanied me on this chase.

This is a sample of my Tropical Storm Gordon chase footage. This video was taken during Gordon’s slow and erratic movement near and over South Florida, from November 13-16, 1994. Gordon was a relatively disorganized tropical storm, however, it had a very large windfield and produced extended periods of tropical storm conditions over the southern peninsula. Originating in the Caribbean Sea, south of Jamaica, Gordon moved northward across Cuba, then turned west-northwest through the Florida Straits into the Gulf of Mexico and then recurved sharply to the northeast, finally making landfall near Fort Myers. Gordon’s maximum sustained winds were near 50mph with gusts near 70mph. The highest officially recorded winds in South Florida were sustained at 53mph from Virginia Key (near Miami) and a gust to 62mph at the Fowey Rocks lighthouse. I recorded a gust of 72kt (83mph) at my home in Southern Dade country, which was noted in the National Hurricane Center preliminary report on the storm. Highest winds in this video are sustained around 40mph, gusting to 60mph, and occur between 3min 40sec and 4min 30sec into the clip. After leaving Florida, Gordon restrengthend in the Atlantic and reached Hurricane strength offshore North Carolina.
