Time was, when the sirens went off, you had 2-3 minutes to get to the shelter.
About 8PM in KC, the sirens went off near my apartment, but the warning only indicated "a thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado".
Too many false alarms, and people will start ignoring them.

This was taken on the west side of Aurora, NE in the evening of June 17, 2009. I’m amazed at these wonders and love the excitement of seeking out a new adventure. This was definitely an adventure. On May 13th 2009, Matt Van Every leads Extreme Tornado Tours to within 100 feet of a violent tornado before they have to rapidly BACK UP! The video was shot 5 miles east of Kirksville, MO on SH11 by tour guest Blake Knapp. Large debris crashed all around them as it passed 50 feet behind a house.
TVN’s RC Super Hauler aircraft deployed multiple parachute probes into the inflow region of the MONSTER supercell thunderstorm that eventually spawned the Aurora, NE tornado. INSANE video from inside the powerful Aurora, Nebraska tornado on June 17, 2009. The tornado intensified right on top of the TornadoVideos.net SRV Dominator, and the window was blown out as an intense mini suction vortex passed over the vehicle. This amazing EF2 tornado was the 3rd intercepted by Hank Schyma just east of Grand Island Nebraska (approaching Aurora) on June 17th 2009. At one point it was a 1/4 mile wide and destroyed a families home and barn. 6 people escaped into the basement seconds before their house was ripped apart.
