As many of you already know, the weather here in NYC is getting dangerously cold, the past few days.
I know there are homeless shelters, but there are many who don’t go there. I know about 3 homeless guys in my neighborhood alone, who are ALWAYS outside (even in the 18 degrees Fahrenheit weather). I know another homeless guy near my job, but i think he’s mentally ill, I still don’t understand how he can manage the FREEZING weather while pushing his shopping cart back and forth!??

I remember about 2 years ago, a homeless guy got drunk and died in the cold. Why would today’s homeless take that risk?

Storm Chaser Aaron Estman captured dramatic footage of the extreme flooding that impacted the greater Dallas, TX area on Sept. 8, 2010. Tropical Storm Hermine was responsible for over 6 inches of rain that fell in a relatively short time, causing extensive travel issues as some area roads were submerged under several feet of rushing flood waters! The Jarrell Texas F5 Tornado Initially a weak pencil-like tornado near the Bell-Williamson County line, the funnel rapidly intensified into a 3/4 mile wide multi-vortex storm at around 3:45 PM CDT. Its first damage occurred three minutes later at 3:48 PM CDT in the northwestern portion of Jarrell striking Double Creek Estates. It later moved into a wooded area before dissipating after damaging numerous trees. Grass and dirt in fields near Jarrell were ripped out of the ground to a depth of 18 in or (50 cm). When the tornado crossed county roads outside Jarrell, it ripped 500 feet (150m) of asphalt off the roads. About 40 structures were completely destroyed by the tornado and dozens of vehicles were lifted in the air and tossed, some thrown more than half a mile. Many researchers, after reviewing aerial damage photographs of Double Creek Estates, considered the Jarrell storm to be the most violent tornado, in terms of damage intensity, that they had ever seen. Most of the homes in the tornadoes path were well-constructed and bolted to their foundations, but even so the tornado left only the slab foundations. Several entire families were killed in the tornado, including all five members of the Igo family and all four members of the Moehring family. There were 27 human fatalities in the Double Creek subdivision. In addition, about 300 cattle were killed by the storm. About 10 minutes prior to the main event, eye-witnesses spotted additional tornadoes north and west of

I have a 7by12 ft. and 7.8 high shelter I bought to put my motorcycle in. It has a removable front door. Before I would cover it with a motorcycle cover and it did have two places where air could get in but I still would cover the bike with sheets to keep moisture off. My question is should I live the front open? Or close the front up on the she lter to keep the moisture away. When the weather is bad I will close it up but I am trying to keep the moisture away. I noticed it had water drops on the ceiling when ai opened it today after we had a little snow for a couple of days and today it finally got in the mid fourties so I was going to take a short ride. Thanks for your time.

Arlington Cemetery’s "Tomb of the Unknowns" has a guard in place that remains at their post for 30-60 minutes. Does the guard remain at their post during harsh thunderstorms and similar weather? Do they stay put or seek shelter?

This is not to suggest that they are not capable of remaining at their post at these times. I understand there are very high standards for this position.

(And if you’re a US citizen and you don’t know what the Tomb of the Unknowns is, shame on you. Stop playing World of Warcraft for 10 minutes and read a book, for crying out loud.)

Okay I live in a rural city. We have animal control and another rescue here in town besides the one I volunteer for. The other rescue (lets just call them Life) has been here for roughly a year. They only take in owner surrenders and strays and since they started they have: Neglected animals, have had aspca called on them twice, let there dogs get loose and breed with the other dogs on the property, used public donations for personal use, fired all of their “board of directors,” let go all of their volunteers, went bankrupt, said they were going to go out of business….
Here are a few examples of the kind of people they are:
Last year they took money for rabies shots and never gave the shots, they left small and large dogs in the mud during icy weather with no food or water, they take dog food donations from wlmart and still ask for public dog food donations (which if it were not for them it would have been donated to the city shelter or us—we are paying for food out of pocket!)
The aspca does not come out here and look at the situation. They send a sheriff out to look and call them back if it’s too bad. But the sheriff could care less. The whole city could care less. So what are we to do?
They have the support of police force and of the newspapers. The newspaper will not even run out adoptable pets because of Life. They just tell us, they have seniority.
We don’t know what we could do. Should we call the aspca and tell them? Is there something else we could do?
Or am I overreacting?
We are such a small town that people think that we are part of Life. And if they know the difference they don’t want to donate or get involved with us because Life has pretty much burned ALL their bridges. They owe everyone money and they rip everyone of. But no one will open their mouths and say anything about it!
could we take pictures and send them to the newspaper signed anon? lol/

I am a Pakistani and a Muslim. I am very confused about my country`s reputation. Some say it`s a developing country and others say that it is a nest that gives shelter to TERRORISTS. Which one you think is it? I am not as such into politics but still i wanted to know weather we are the GOOD ONES or THE BAD ONES on the eyes of the world.

So my recently adopted apbt pup is starting to show more signs every day of being a pit lab mix. In fact now the whole body looks like a labs, the only thing left is the pit face with a little of a longer snout. Here’s my question (s)

1: anyone else had a lab pit mix before? What type of temperament can I expect? Is it possible that he will take on mostly pit or mostly lab? or will he most definitely be a 50-50 balanced? (would it help if I posted a picture? anyone out there who can tell at sight) I’m wondering what type of behavior I can expect, I already know from the experience that he’s extremely loyal, but I mean the attitude, I know labs are what you might call perma puppies, and as they get older tire out and get lazy, and pits are very serious and at attention, which of these should I more expect? This one’s definitely goofy, but is that just because he’s a pup and he’ll grow out of it, or is it just a chance thing that he might take on more of the labs behavior. As far as protection goes and every thing else, will I more likely have the goofy but loyal lab, the serious pit, or an even balance of both? (again, if it would help at all with telling how much he has I could get a picture, its just a bit of a hassle right now)

also, I took him for a walk in the snow yesterday, and was surprised at how well he did in it, he seemed to be very adapt to the snow even with his short fur. Today we got hit with some major snow though and its a foot deep in some places, and still going up. What can my dog tolerate and what is the comfort/uncomfort weather for a winter walk? Would a lab pit mix be fine with an hour or more exercise in deep snow? And how much added warmth would a coat provide?

I had him outside before the weather got bad in a semi shelter that protected from rain but not much more, and I also brought him in because I heard that it helps their behavior to improve especially their loving of humans, as they feel more dependent to them. But I have a friend who raised labs and she says its fine to keep them in a kennel even in the winter as long as its insulated and has hay, where do I draw the line and tell whether he will be fine living outside but in a warm kennel, and not wanting him to start becoming more independent because of living outside. Any experiences here?

this is a very jumbled and complicated question, but anything you would know about these questions from research or through experience (I would prefer you say which of these you are getting your info from) is HIGHLY, HIGHLY, appreciated.
its not so much that I want him outside, I prefer having him inside, however knowing that would be helpful
"An hour is way too much to be outside with the dog to be honest."

You mean just for the cold, or because he’s just a puppy? I heard that pits and labs need a lot of exercise, would an accumulative 2 hours be good if I did it in 30 minute exercises? Cause I heard and read puppies (especially these breeds) need a lot of exercise just to behave.
so no 50-50 split, then would I be able to tell from the looks? Like would it just be whatever the dog looks more like will tell the temperament, or could it end up looking like a lab and acting like a pit, or vise versa?

the outdoor kitty has welcomed himself to our home but he hasnt had shots i made him a shelter by the front door to stay out of weather and my indoor kitty hasnt had shots in awhile. indoor kitty tries to see what is at the door at sometimes walks where he has walked.

Are the plastic igloos good for winter? What will help keep her warm? (She’s part husky and loves it outdoors. She frequently refuses to come inside out of the weather. But I think she should have a good, warm shelter when she wants it.)
Thanks! I will probably get a dogloo, but I have a Q: They seem to have a lip at the door–won’t that hold water in if it rains into the house? Or does it have drain holes?
