Just because we're now really taking note of them, some people think that they're worse or more frequent. I don't personally see any data that would support that idea, but I don't think they care. They see those occurrences as things that bolster their theory of how the world works, and to hell with the facts :-) As to the specific groups that make those assertions, I think you'd be mostly looking at very fundamentalist groups, particularly of Christians. They have the notion of Armageddon and the cataclysms of their Book of Revelation that they believe in, and a lot of them want desperately to see those ideas supported, so they latch onto everything negative as "proof" of their beliefs.
