Traveling during hurricane season to USVI?
Would it be stupid to travel to the caribbean for a week, particularly to St. Johns and St. Thomas, during September because of hurricane season? How likely am I to have bad weather?

Hurricane season is roughly 26 weeks long. A hurricane hits once every 10 years, small med and large. if you take a 1 week trip, that’s a 1/260 chance of getting caught or less than one half of one percent. You’ll save a lot more than that in discounted prices even with trip insurance, highly recommended, so it’s a good deal. Last time we went, a tropical storm settled over the islands for the entire first week, so we played in the rain. As an added bonus, there is a low pressure cap that is inhibiting the growth of tropical depressions this year so chances are good for clear weather ahead. Do it. Do It. DO IT!!!!

NO!!! It’s not likely that a hurricane is gonna hit you but it rains a little but not so much that it stops you from having fun and you’ll like when it rains the place becomes more cooler and more beautiful. During september is just as fine as any time to go. People makes it seem like just because its hurricane season one is gonna hit and even if one does the Virgin Islands is prepared for it unlike the states because we are threatened every year by them but rarely get hit. So a hurricane like katrina that hit new orleans would not compare to hurricane marilyn that hit the V.I back in the late eighties mashing up many thing.There is a hurricane plan in place incase one does happen and they also let you know how strong and when its gonna hit and the possibilities of it hitting us directly and all of that. they let u know in advance even if its just a tropical storm or whatever but the most i would say is rain and rain and just cuz its hurricane season doesnt mean cheaper tickets. Your completely safe but if you dont want to do it dont but I RECOMMEND YOU DO IT! YOUR GONNA HAVE A FANTASTIC TIME! and if you have a fantastic time or dont feel like going in september visit in december or april. In december we have a lot of fun community things you can do like miracle on main street, lighting of the christmas tree and theres santa class in the mall and in april to may its carnival time where theres lots and lots of events to go to any month is a perfect month to visit and rain never stops anything in the V.I to us its just like sun something u already use to.
No and yes just purchase travelers insurance and you will be okay and your going at one of the worst times. Hurricane season peaks in September through October I saw it on the weather channel a few days ago. Cant you wait to go another time just to be on the safe side?
"Stupid?" No. You get better deals in the low season. If you have trip insurance, you’ll be fine.
"How likely…?" No one know whether a hurricane or other storm will hit a particular place at a particular time. September is the peak of the hurricane season, however. You could check the Weather Channel’s website to see what your "odds" are, but that’s only an estimate.
BTW: "St. John’s" is a town on the island of Antigua. "St. John" is in the USVI - and it’s very beautiful and peaceful. St. Thomas, on the other hand, can be a busy, crowded island if there are several cruise ships in port.
