Weather Affects & At Types of Conditions ?
I was very annoyed with our news channels. Everything is always the "Metro Area", when there is also life beyond. Anyway…..
I have 2 horses, both have full-winter coats. We live in the SE area of MN. They have a run-in shelter. The gelding gets very spooky when the wind really blows and so won’t use the shelter. I think he feels that he has to see everything he hears. The mare isn’t nearly as spooky as he is and will usually use the shelter. Anyway, the weather forecast said that our windchills were going to go "well below zero". I didn’t realize exactly what this meant. My gelding was very cold this morning and I had the mare separated due to a leg injury. My daughter and I put on their wind/rain sheets that are also rated as mid-weight.
My issue is….at what temperature and windchill does a horse with a full winter coat need more protection than what I have explained here? I’m abit annoyed with our newscasters because it seems they could have done a more complete job of weather warnings and affects for our horses.
Thank you for any additional knowledge.

Your horses need to be in a barn in freezing weather. You live in MN. You really ought to know by now that it gets cold in MN. And that you can’t leave your horses out in MN winter weather.
What part of well below zero confuses you?
Wind chill is the temperature that the average person feels in the wind. If the wind chill factor is "well below zero", the average person would feel below zero temps. That’s cold. I’m not around horses frequently, but if it is like that, I’d like to know that they were safely secured in a barn of any sort.
