What do you do with a dog owner that leaves his small dog out in the cold and rain without shelter?
I have a neighbor that leaves his toy poodle outside without any shelter from cold and rain. He states that it is an animal and belongs out in any weather without shelter. I did at one time take the dog out of the rain and cold. The dog was cold, wet, dirty, shivering, and scared out of it’s mind. The neighbor stated that if I did that again he would call the sheriff(I did enter his property to rescue the dog). I feel that I should have called Animal Control. It is now over 100 and the dog has only a shade tree to keep it out of the heat. There are some serious medical concerns with the wife of the neighbor that I don’t want to aggrivate, but I feel the dog issue needs to be dealt with. Others say not to get involved but I feel that someone needs to pound some sense into that man. What suggestions do you have in this matter?

I’d call the Humane Society or ASPCA immediately.
Be the mouth piece for the poor dog.
Report him. He is neglecting his animal.. and that is a form a abuse..
I think it is required by law to provide adequate shelter, water, and food for your dog. Report him to the Animal Control.
call the aspca or the police or something. thats not okay.
the worst that could happen is the police say they cannot do anything about it and you are back to where you were
Turn him in to Animal Control. That is absurd.
Call animal control the poor dog
Report it but not to animal control because if the dog was there more the 60 day and no one claims it the well but it to sleep.
Report him. Some people are just ignorant when it comes to caring for their dogs.
take the dog somewhere safe.. and call he authorities. an animals cannot survive without proper shelter.
if you fear your neighbor will do something if you take the dog call the authorities first… but be sure they understand the dog is in a desperate situation and time is of the essence.
if it was me.. i would take the dog first… this is life and death.
that person should not have the privilege of owning an animal.
GET INVOLVED! that is the problem with things today… no one wants to get involved. you need to do the right thing. the animal has a right to live. your neighbor is a jerk!
worse comes to worse… I’d steal the dog and surrender it to a no kill shelter where someone who will actually take care of it will adopt it.
report the owner to the animal police.Leaving the animal in the rain with no shelter is concidered animal abuse!!
Call ASPCA or something like that b4 it’s too late that’s very bad animal abuse well u can also tell him that think he needs dog shelter and talk to him bout it but if he don’t listen it’s animal abuse they arrest ppl who do that all the time!
I have a friend who noticed her neighbors neglecting a poor kitten and she just took the thing from them and took it into her own care. Now I know that may not be the safest bet, as you could get in trouble, but I’d definitely call animal control– and if you feel that you yourself could give it a good home, or know of someone who could..give it your best shot to make sure you see that this animal receives the treatment it deserves. Whatever you do, do not ignore or belittle the situation. Your concern is a very valid one and if it wasn’t for your awareness of the problem, it could become something much much worse.
Report him to the humane society right off!! I had a similar situation and i reported the dog got taken away! It was a adorable little shi tzu! You definetly should report him!! Poor dog
That man is an idiot. Sure, animals don’t live in houses in the wild, but dogs are not wild animals and even if they were, surely those dogs would migrate or move to somewhere where they would actually be able to withstand the weather. Plus, why would anyone buy a toy poodle and keep it outside? It’s not nice to keep ANY dog outside without shelter or companionship, but at least some are better equipped to deal with the elements.
I would call animal control on him next time. Or even today. It doesn’t have to be horrid weather outside for most city’s or state’s laws to require adequate housing, water, food, and veterinary assistance.
The animal shelters are so full with pets they end up putting them to sleep. If the dog isn’t injured or ill I would politley try talking to the neighbor…maybe he’s in a financial crisis and try to help him. If anything, I would go to maybe a local thrift store and buy a small doggie house and give it to them, check out craigslist.org in your area a lot of people are giving away pet supplies for free. If the neighbor isn’t home often, offer to keep an eye on the dogs water dish. I know it sounds silly…but it’s better than a dog catcher taking it away.
