You shouldn't be to worried about losing data on the PS3. If you keep loosing power, buy a battery backup that beeps when the power goes out. It will give you more than enough time to safely power off your Playstation. If you are still set on getting an external hard drive, make sure you get one that is USB powered, and like the guy above me said, make sure its formated in Fat32, not NTFS, because if you don't safely remove a NTFS drive all your data can become corrupted, and that is not the case with Fat32.

Heres a good external drive. (Get one off newegg not Amazon. You will save money.)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145268

This one is 320gb, and its 50 dollars after rebate, and has free shipping.

Hope I Helped!

Anything really. I would get one that is bus powered, meaning you will not need to pug it into a wall, as well as the PS3. The drive will need to be formatted to FAT 32, not NTFS, but most drives come like this.
Amazon.com has some amazing drives cheep, and will ship for free!

PS
Make sure to get one that it at least the size of the HD in your PS3, if not bigger!
