I think the government’s primary role is to coordinate relief efforts. Sure, they have some capabilities that private charities don’t have — they can helicopter in relief supplies and call in the Guard. But the first line of relief should be relief organizations like the Red Cross. The government should support them, coordinate with them, and be prepared to back them up in case their best efforts fall short.
The government should provide temporary housing for those left homeless due to disasters, and help them with getting at least the basics so they can start putting their lives back together. Even if it means a bunch of trailers set up in a parking lot somewhere, at least it is shelter for the people. The same help should be available to everyone, regardless of family size. (There should be no penalty for not having children. Even if you are childless, you still need a place to live, clothes and food.)
The government should have acted like they cared. They should have provided more shelter. They should have provided more food. They should have provided more health care. They should have helped clean the area up quicker. They should have helped the people from being evicted. They should have provided more services for them.
they should inform, advise, and do whatever is nesecerry to help the people they govern, this should be priority ONE.
and by help i mean get the people to atleast where they were before the disaster.
