You can protect yourself by purchasing "trip interruption" insurance before you leave home. The insurance is sold by travel agencies and - for hurricanes - has to be purchased before the storm is named. Hurricane season is actually June 1st to November 30th in the northern hemisphere.

For the past 2 years, we've had nothing...which is very lucky.
