When is it safe to ride a horse after colic?
My horse has never coliced in the five years I have had him, but for some wierd reason he coliced this morning. My mom caught it quick and gave him a dose of banamine, and he is outside grazing. We think it was from eating to much sand, because his this week would ahve been the next dose of SandClear. So, yeah he is doing fine right know, just a little "drugged" looking, but he has pooped two or three times, he is eating, and bossing the other horses around (just not with as much enthusiasim lol)
Anyways, I was wondering when do you think it will be safe to ride him again? I know DEFINETLY not today or tomorrow…just keep watching him to make sure he doesn’t start colicing again.
A tropical storm is about to hit, so I doubt I can ride him for three days anyways…do you think I could start riding him then? She I work him like normal or just keep it light riding for the rest of this week, and start riding him normal next weekend????
THANKS…

I would give him a couple days off with no work then re-evaluate. Is he acting normal, playing in the pasture and looking happy then it would probably be OK to ride him in a week. Take it slow and make sure you are paying extra attention to how he is feeling/acting. You obviously know horses and know yours very well. If something is wrong or simply ‘off’ about him then just don’t ride for a day or two. All horses are different so you just have to adapt to yours. If it were my horse I would give 3-4 days off then trail ride (at a walk) for a couple day. Jazz bounces back from everything really quickly though so your horse might take a little longer.
Someone suggested lunging. For most horses lunging is just as strenous at riding. If you are worried about his health for riding then don’t lunge.
I’m guessing Fay(sp?) is coming through your area. All we’re getting is LOADS of rain but thankfully nothing major. Hope all is well there!
I’d say minimum a week.
bare minimum a week
If a colic was not serious then I would say you would be fine riding him after a couple of days. You know your horse, you know when he is not feeling well and when he is but colic is colic. Once the impaction is gone the horse should be fine again unless their are other problems if that makes sense. If he is not rolling around or looking sick then he is probably just fine again. Weird things can make a horse colic including the weather. Good luck
i would say give him a week, mabey lunge him. My horse WE THINK almost died from colic and he lost A LOT of weight and i rode him a month later but u should not have to wait that long. And i hope your horse feels beter. thank god you found him before it got worse
I would give him a few days off then start back lightly a couple of days before returning to normal activity. I’m so glad it was caught early. Sometimes that’s half the battle.
Well, because you gave Banamine, your horse may still be colicking and you have masked the symptoms. Watch him very closely, and never give Banamine when a horse colics until the vet tells you to. Banamine relieves pain…it does not treat or cure colic. The fact that he has pooped and is eating is a good sign, but his food should have been removed when the colic began. You are not in the clear yet with this. Hopefully it was just a gas pocket and nothing more. But if the symptoms return, the vet should come out asap.
