There have been several things that have worked against storm development, up until now. One has been the Saharan dust cloud over the Atlantic. This has help to keep the water temperature cool. The few storms that have formed have ran into unfavorable conditions, namely wind shear. For the NHC hurricane season forecast to verify, there will have to be two storms per week into October.

With that said, things may be on the uptick soon in the Atlantic. There is a tropical wave about 800 miles west of the Cape Verdes Islands that is showing good potential for development. The Saharan dust cloud has abated a lot, so that is allowing the waters to warm up. We may well start to get active around mid August.

first week of September is the statistical peak so there's plenty of time for the season to prove itself.
