If you've ever worked in or for grocery and supply stores, you would know that people wait until the last minute for EVERYTHING. Christmas, Thanksgiving, and holiday, and yes, hurricanes. But it's not everybody. It's just a lot of people. Way too many people. You'd think they'd learn, but so far, no dice.

Because this is America and people can shop whenever they want to. Why are you freaking out about it..Did you have to work late at Wal-Mart? BTWt...some people do not have the money or credit to go buy a generator. As a native Floridian you can make it a few days with no generator after a hurricane..It is called ice chest, ice, and a grill.

Some people, not all.

Hurricane Alicia back in 1983 (little warning for that one) taught me well. I remember driving down the middle of Memorial Drive in hurricane force winds trying to find a store that was open and had power. I got the last loaf of bread at the Dairy Ashford Randall's (a tiny loaf of Pepperidge Farm) and promptly cussed at by some housefrau.

Since then I've always kept canned goods, water, and batteries stocked. My wife bought a bag of tea candles yesterday because she thought, "if we lose power, we can still have nice lighting." I won't argue. I did have to go to Costco to replenish the supply of Rice Krispy Treats because I've been putting one in my lunch every day.

By and large, we Houstonians DO NOT act like boneheads. One thing your diatribe didn't take into account was the local media whipping everyone into a froth about how power could be out for weeks or the like. Yes, people get frightened.

Lay off.
